IMD yellow alert: Mumbai, its neighbouring districts likely to receive heavy showers today

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai and parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), forecasting heavy rainfall at isolated places on Thursday as the monsoon remains active over Konkan.

According to the latest district-wise forecast and warning issued by the Regional Meteorological Centre, Mumbai, on Thursday, Mumbai is likely to receive heavy rainfall at isolated places on Thursday, followed by moderate rain on Friday.

Light to moderate rain is expected thereafter until August 17. The probability of rainfall remains very likely throughout the five-day period.

Thane has also been placed under a yellow alert, with heavy rainfall at isolated places forecast for Thursday and Friday. Rainfall is expected to ease to light to moderate intensity thereafter.

Meanwhile, Palghar is likely to receive moderate rain over the next two days, followed by light to moderate rainfall.

Raigad is under a higher-intensity outlook, with heavy rainfall likely at a few places on Thursday and at isolated places on Friday, followed by moderate rain.

Heavy rain forecast for Konkan, ghat sections; thunderstorms possible in Vidarbha

Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg are also likely to receive heavy rainfall at a few or isolated places over the next couple of days, with the possibility of heavy rain continuing into the subsequent days in some areas.

Squally weather and rough sea conditions are also expected along the Konkan coast.

The ghat sections of Nashik, Pune, Satara and Kolhapur may receive heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated or a few places over the coming days.

Parts of Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada are likely to receive light to moderate rain or light rain and thundershowers on Thursday, with similar conditions possible on subsequent days.

Most districts in Vidarbha have not been placed under any significant warning. However, isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, heavy rainfall and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph are possible in Amravati, Bhandara, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Gondia and Nagpur on some days.

The yellow alert indicates the possibility of localised heavy spells, which could lead to waterlogging in low-lying and urban areas, traffic disruptions and temporary impacts on civic services.

IMD advises citizens, farmers to take precautions during storms

Citizens have been advised to check traffic conditions before heading out, avoid vulnerable structures and stay away from tall trees during thunderstorms. The IMD has also advised residents to unplug electrical appliances and keep themselves updated with the latest weather bulletins.

Farmers have been asked to harvest matured crops where possible, provide support to young plants, drain excess water from fields and keep livestock indoors during storms.

The forecast and warning for any day is valid from 8.30 am IST of that day until 8.30 am IST of the following day.
