Three days of incessant rain that left large parts of Navi Mumbai waterlogged has prompted the municipal corporation to launch a citywide safety crackdown, with Mayor Sujata Patil ordering immediate action against officials found negligent in two incidents that have sparked public outrage.

After personally inspecting rain-hit areas from Belapur to Digha on Wednesday, the mayor chaired an emergency review meeting with Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde, Deputy Mayor Dashrath Bhagat, and senior civic officials, directing them to plug safety lapses before more heavy rain hits the city.

The meeting focused on two serious incidents that occurred during the monsoon spell. Two young girls suffered electric shocks after allegedly coming into contact with an exposed live wire near the LP Signal, while the death of a pregnant woman at an NMMC hospital in Vashi has raised questions over alleged medical negligence.

Taking a stern stand, the mayor ordered immediate administrative action against those responsible for the electrocution incident and directed Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) officials to conduct a joint inspection with Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) to identify and secure exposed electrical installations across the city.

In the hospital death case, a high-level inquiry committee has been constituted to investigate the circumstances leading to the woman's death. Officials have also been instructed to initiate action wherever preliminary negligence is established.

With Navi Mumbai witnessing flooding at several locations due to heavy rainfall and high tides, the civic administration has directed all departments to physically inspect and clear stormwater drains to ensure rainwater flows freely and prevent further waterlogging.

Safety audits ordered, schools asked to inspect premises

The municipal commissioner also ordered structural and fire safety audits of coaching classes and tuition centres across Navi Mumbai. Schools have been asked to conduct structural inspections and trim trees within their premises to minimise monsoon-related risks before classes resume.

Warning officials against complacency, Mayor Patil said public safety would remain the administration's top priority and that every department would be held accountable for lapses during the monsoon.

The civic body has appealed to citizens to remain alert during heavy rainfall and contact the NMMC's 24X7 toll-free emergency helplines 1800-222-309 and 800-222-310 for any rain-related assistance.
