Mumbai Monsoon: One dead, over 250 tree-fall complaints as heavy rain, gusty winds batter city

Mumbai witnessed intense monsoon activity between 8 am and 1 pm on Sunday, with strong winds triggering widespread tree fall incidents across the city and suburbs, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The civic body recorded average rainfall of 22.79 mm in the city, 38.69 mm in the eastern suburbs, and 36.99 mm in the western suburbs during the period. Despite the downpour, no waterlogging complaints were reported from any part of Mumbai.

However, wind speeds remained significantly high, with gusts reaching 72.4 kmph in C and D ward areas of the city, 75 kmph in Ghatkopar, and 77 kmph in Bandra West.

The strong winds led to more than 250 complaints of fallen trees and branches across Mumbai. In a tragic incident, a 63-year-old man, Yunus Kundawala, died after a tree fell on a shop near Gomes Town building in Kurla Kamani area. The information was confirmed by Faujia Hospital.

In another weather-related incident, soil from a hill slope slid near Unit No 4, opposite the crime branch office in Antop Hill, after trees were uprooted. No casualties were reported. Similarly, an empty ground-plus-three structure collapsed near Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road in the Worli Dairy area. However, no injuries were reported in the incident.

The civic body also noted that 15 short-circuit incidents were reported across the city and suburbs.

Despite the disruption, railway services remained smooth. The BEST undertaking, however, diverted bus routes at 12 locations due to tree falls blocking roads.

Mumbai witnessed heavy to very heavy rainfall between 8.30 am and 2.30 pm on Sunday, with several suburban pockets receiving intense downpours, according to rainfall data from civic weather stations.

Vikhroli topped the chart with 72.0 mm, followed by Santacruz at 62.8 mm, indicating sustained heavy showers in the suburbs.

Other significant readings included Ram Mandir (49.0 mm), Sion (47.5 mm), and Bandra (46.0 mm), reflecting widespread.

Vidyavihar reported 43.5-mm rainfall, Byculla 20 mm, and Colaba 21.4 mm.

The uneven distribution highlights the typical monsoon pattern in the city, with suburban belts bearing the brunt of intense rainfall spells while island city areas receive comparatively moderate showers.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation amid ongoing monsoon activity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
