Heavy monsoon rain continued to batter Mumbai over the past 24 hours, leaving two people dead, several injured and causing widespread disruption across the city, officials said.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported dozens of rain-related incidents, including tree falls, short circuits, structural collapses and a landslide.
A tragic incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon in Chembur when a large peepal tree was uprooted and fell onto a school bus near Diamond Garden at around 2.58 pm.
The bus, belonging to Universal High School, was carrying around a dozen children at the time of the incident.
Local residents, the bus conductor and emergency responders rescued the trapped children before they were rushed to Zen Hospital.
An 11-year-old student, Vihan Shrivastava, succumbed to his injuries. Three children remain admitted to hospital in a stable condition, including a 10-year-old boy who is receiving treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU). Another child was treated and later discharged.
Later on Tuesday night, another fatal incident was reported in Walkeshwar.
At around 11.22 pm, part of the third-floor balcony of the G+3 Suryaprakash Building on Babulnath Road collapsed onto a nearby petrol pump.
A 51-year-old petrol pump worker, identified as Santosh Bharaskar, suffered serious injuries and was taken to JJ Hospital, where doctors declared him dead before admission.
Heavy rainfall also triggered a landslide in Kurla (West) at around 10 pm on Tuesday.
According to civic officials, mud and rocks slid down a hillside behind Amber Building in Buddha Colony.
Five families living above the retaining wall had already shifted to safer locations. The remaining family, which included a differently abled member, was safely evacuated by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and BMC teams.
Two additional families living at the base of the hill were also moved to temporary shelters. No injuries or fatalities were reported in the landslide.
The BMC's Disaster Management Department received a large number of emergency calls during the 24-hour period.
Official data showed:
- 90 incidents of tree and branch falls
- 30 incidents of short circuits
- Six incidents involving partial house or wall collapses
Of the 90 tree-related complaints, 36 were reported in the city, 23 in the eastern suburbs and 31 in the western suburbs.
Similarly, the 30 short circuit incidents included 16 in the city, four in the eastern suburbs and 10 in the western suburbs.
The six structural collapse complaints comprised one in the city, three in the eastern suburbs and two in the western suburbs.
The western suburbs recorded the highest average rainfall during the 24-hour period at 109.16 mm, followed by 86.94 mm in the island city.
Heavy showers continued across several parts of Mumbai through Tuesday and Wednesday morning.
Despite the heavy rainfall, civic authorities said there was no major disruption to transport services.
Road traffic across Mumbai and its suburbs remained normal on Wednesday morning.
Suburban train services on both the Central Railway and Western Railway corridors were also operating smoothly.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast generally cloudy skies with heavy rainfall and thunderstorms over Mumbai and its suburbs during the next 24 hours.
Authorities have also warned of high tides exceeding 4.2 metres, advising residents, particularly those living in low-lying and coastal areas, to remain alert and follow official advisories.
Meanwhile, Thane witnessed moderate to heavy rainfall on Wednesday morning, with the city recording 50.28 mm of rain between 8.30 am and 12.30 pm, according to the Thane Municipal Corporation's Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC).
Rainfall steadily intensified through the morning, with 5.33 mm recorded by 9.30 am, followed by 16.77 mm by 10.30 am, 16.76 mm by 11.30 am and 11.42 mm by 12.30 pm.
With the latest spell, Thane's cumulative rainfall for the monsoon season has reached 461.62 mm, compared with 820.24 mm recorded during the corresponding period last year.
