Mumbaikars on their way to work on Tuesday were surprised to encounter rain in isolated pockets, an occurrence that prompted the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to update its 10 am green alert for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region to a yellow alert until Wednesday, indicating heavy rainfall at some spots.
According to the BMC Disaster Management Department's rain situation report for August 11, covering 8 am to 6 pm, Colaba recorded 14.0 mm of rain in the preceding 24 hours, while 24.4 mm had been recorded up to 5.30 pm on Tuesday. At Santacruz, rainfall in the preceding 24 hours stood at 20 mm, while the rainfall recorded up to 5.30 pm was 43.8 mm.
The BMC's automated rainfall monitoring network recorded, up to 6 pm, 30.12 mm of rainfall in the city, 44.49 mm in the eastern suburbs and 53.83 mm in the western suburbs.
So far this monsoon, Colaba has recorded 1675.8 mm of rainfall, which amounts to 79.99 per cent of Mumbai's average seasonal rainfall, and Santacruz has recorded 2019.8 mm or 87.1 per cent. Around the same time last year, Colaba recorded 48.4 per cent, and Santacruz 59.22 per cent.
The BMC weather forecast, based on information received from the Colaba weather station, said that Mumbai city and its suburbs were expected to remain generally cloudy over the next 24 hours, with moderate rainfall likely. Heavy spells of rain were also possible at some locations.

Reports of a road accident on the Western Express Highway near Borivli surfaced on Tuesday afternoon. In addition to this, a tanker got stranded at the spot, leading to a traffic jam. According to Google Maps, this stretch of highway was red, representing slow traffic movement, while commuters reported a collision near the Dindoshi Metro station.
However, a senior traffic police official claimed there was no such mishap. "There was slow traffic movement in this portion of the WEH in the morning hours because of the rain and waterlogging at some points, nothing else," said the official. Repeated attempts were made to contact senior PI Dindoshi police station to confirm reports of the collision, but mid-day didn't receive a response by press time.
Traffic movement was glacial during the day on Swami Vivekanand Road in Vile Parle and Andheri, and similar slow traffic movement was also seen on Link Road near the Juhu Vile Parle Development (JVPD) Scheme neighbourhood. The roads connecting eastern and western suburbs also remained jam-packed.
The civic disaster management department received six complaints of short circuits - two in the city, one in the eastern suburbs and three in the western suburbs. The complaints were forwarded to the concerned electrical supply agencies for necessary assistance. No casualties were reported.
The BMC received 14 complaints related to fallen trees/tree branches - two from the eastern suburbs and 12 from the western suburbs. The complaints were forwarded to the departments concerned, and teams were instructed to undertake tree-cutting and removal operations. No casualties were reported in these incidents either.
