Mumbai rains: IMD issues red alert as heavy downpour triggers widespread waterlogging

Mumbai woke up to heavy rainfall on Thursday, with widespread waterlogging reported across several parts of the city after intense overnight showers. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Mumbai and neighbouring districts of Thane, Palghar and Raigad, warning of intense spells of rain and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places.

Several low-lying areas, including Andheri, Kings Circle, Gandhi Market, SIES College and Sion, witnessed waterlogging, affecting traffic movement during the morning rush hour.

According to the IMD, Mumbai city recorded 134 mm of rainfall, while the eastern suburbs received 164 mm and the western suburbs recorded 149 mm.

IMD issues red warning for Mumbai and adjoining districts

The weather department has forecast intense spells of rain with extremely heavy rainfall likely at isolated places on July 2.

In its latest nowcast issued at 7:45 a.m., valid for the next three hours, the IMD upgraded its alert to a Red Warning for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad.

The weather agency said intense spells of rain are very likely at isolated places and advised residents to take necessary precautions.

Santacruz records highest overnight rainfall

According to the IMD, Santacruz recorded the highest overnight rainfall among its observatories, receiving 165.9 mm between 8.30 a.m. on July 1 and 5.30 a.m. on July 2.

Juhu followed closely with 164.5 mm of rainfall, while Vikhroli received 163 mm. Other areas that recorded heavy rainfall included Ram Mandir with 157 mm, Bandra with 141.5 mm and Vidyavihar with 132 mm.

Sion recorded 115 mm of rainfall during the same period, while Chembur received 99.5 mm, Colaba 99 mm and Byculla 97.5 mm.

Eastern suburbs receive highest rainfall

Data released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) showed that the eastern suburbs recorded the highest rainfall between 8 a.m. on July 1 and 6 a.m. on July 2.

Mithagar Municipal School in Mulund topped the list with 218.6 mm of rainfall. It was followed by S Ward Office with 212 mm, Paspoli Powai Municipal School with 208.4 mm, Gawanpada Fire Station with 205.8 mm and Mankhurd Fire Station with 200 mm.

The heavy rainfall led to water accumulation at several locations, prompting civic authorities to closely monitor flood-prone areas.

Western suburbs and island city record intense showers

In the western suburbs, the SWM Santacruz Workshop recorded the highest rainfall at 216 mm. Nariyal Wadi School in Santacruz received 214.4 mm, while Andheri Fire Station recorded 204 mm.

Cooper Hospital and the K West Ward Office registered 193.2 mm and 192.6 mm of rainfall, respectively.

Within the island city, G South Ward Office received the highest rainfall at 187.8 mm. F South Ward Office recorded 179 mm, followed by F North Ward Office with 175 mm. B Nadkarni Park Municipal School in Wadala received 173.6 mm, while Adarsh Nagar School in Worli recorded 172.8 mm.

Authorities advise caution as heavy rain continues

With heavy rainfall expected to continue through the day, civic authorities remain on alert and are monitoring waterlogging-prone locations across Mumbai and its suburbs.

Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall, remain alert in flood-prone areas and follow weather advisories issued by the IMD and local authorities.
