Mumbai rains: IMD warns of heavy showers, flood risk till August 21

Mumbai will continue to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next four days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday, attributing the intense showers to multiple weather systems currently active over the Bay of Bengal, Arabian Sea and the West Coast.

According to IMD, a well-marked low-pressure area persists over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal, stretching across north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts, with an associated cyclonic circulation up to 9.6 km above mean sea level.

An upper-air cyclonic circulation also lies over the northeast Arabian Sea and Gujarat, while a shear zone along latitude 19°N and an offshore trough from south Konkan to north Kerala are further enhancing the monsoon activity.

Impact on Mumbai

Under these combined influences, Mumbai and the surrounding areas are expected to see widespread rainfall activity, with heavy to very heavy showers at several places and isolated extremely heavy rainfall till August 21. Thunder, lightning, and occasional gusty winds of 40-50 kmph are also likely during this period.

Warnings in place

Fishermen have been strictly advised not to venture into the open sea. A port warning has been issued along the north and south Maharashtra coasts, where wind speeds are likely to reach 45-55 kmph, gusting up to 65 kmph. Meanwhile, warnings of flooding in low-lying areas of Mumbai and Konkan have also been issued.
