Residents of Vikhroli have alleged that ongoing construction projects by local developers are worsening waterlogging in the area by blocking stormwater drain outlets and failing to maintain proper drainage around their sites.

"The construction debris, temporary barricades and poorly managed site entrances have obstructed the free flow of rainwater, resulting in flooded roads and water entering residential premises after every spell of heavy rain," said Sanjay Jaiswal, a resident.

Prakash Sonmale, citizen activist and founder of Apla Kannamwarnagar breaks it down. "Every monsoon we are assured that preventive measures have been taken, but the situation remains the same. Several builders have blocked drain outlets near their projects, and the rainwater has nowhere to go. Also, their debris falls and enters the drains when their vehicles carrying raw materials and debris pass through. This has led to clogging," he said.

Another resident alleged that civic complaints often go unanswered until the flooding becomes severe. "The drains are cleaned, but if the outlets are blocked by construction activity, the desilting exercise becomes meaningless. The BMC must ensure that developers keep the drainage network open in the monsoon," said Malhar Shitole, another resident.

Calls made to the S ward officer went unanswered till the time of press.
