Mumbai and surrounding areas continue to witness intense monsoon showers on Monday, with the suburbs receiving significantly higher rainfall than the island city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday also warned of continued heavy to extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds across Konkan and adjoining ghat regions during the late hours of Monday.

As per IMD, the island city, between 8 am and 8 pm on July 6, received an average rainfall of 31 mm, while the Eastern Suburbs recorded 69 mm and the Western Suburbs received 71 mm.

The continuous showers on Monday led to waterlogging in several low-lying areas, tree-fall incidents, traffic congestion, and disruptions to suburban train services in parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

IMD predicts heavy rainfall to continue across several parts of Maharashtra

Meanwhile, the IMD has forecast widespread rainfall activity with heavy to very heavy rainfall at several places and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated locations over Konkan and the adjoining ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra during July 6 and 7.

IMD, while issuing an official statement about the weather forecast, has also warned of strong winds with speeds reaching 70-80 km/h in isolated areas, urging residents to remain cautious. The intensity of rainfall is expected to gradually reduce after July 7, according to the forecast.

Authorities have advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall, especially in flood-prone and landslide-prone areas. Civic agencies and disaster response teams remain on high alert as the region continues to experience an active phase of the southwest monsoon.

97 BEST bus routes affected after flooding and tree falls

The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertook diverting 97 bus routes after heavy rain caused widespread flooding and fallen trees across the city.

Heavy rainfall disrupted BEST bus operations, forcing the transport undertaking to divert several routes after multiple roads were blocked due to uprooted trees, fallen branches, and damaged road infrastructure.

By 6 pm, bus services had been affected at 21 major locations as waterlogged roads and blocked routes made normal operations difficult.

Several key transport corridors were reportedly inaccessible after intense rainfall in low-lying areas.

The Andheri Subway and Malad Subway were among the worst affected, forcing buses to avoid the underpasses and use nearby flyovers and alternative roads instead.
