A 20-year-old second-year student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay was found dead in his hostel room on the Powai campus on Tuesday night, police said.
The deceased was a second-year Materials Science student.
Following the incident, the Powai Police registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) No. 83/2026 under a relevant Section of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023.
Police said further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact cause and circumstances surrounding the death.
In a similar incident, a NEET aspirant from Maharashtra's Ahilyanagar district allegedly died by suicide after receiving lower-than-expected marks in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), police said.
The deceased was a resident of Jalalpur village in Karjat taluka of Ahilyanagar district.
According to family members, the deceased had scored 166 marks in the NEET examination. They said she had expected a higher score and had been under stress after the results were announced.
The incident occurred last week at the deceased's residence.
Family members said she had a separate room where she regularly prepared for her examinations. When there was no response from inside the room for a prolonged period, they entered and found her unresponsive before informing the police.
Based on information provided by a family member, the police registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Officials said further inquiries are in progress.
The incident has once again brought attention to the growing concerns over academic pressure faced by students preparing for highly competitive entrance examinations.
Authorities and mental health experts have repeatedly urged students and families to seek support during periods of stress and not allow examination results to define a student's future or well-being.
NEET is one of India's most competitive entrance examinations for admission to undergraduate medical courses, with lakhs of students appearing for it every year.
