Mumbai job fraud: Three arrested for allegedly cheating job seekers with overseas employment promises

The Pydhonie police on Thursday busted a gang that allegedly cheated job seekers by promising them employment abroad and arrested three accused from different states.

In an official statement, Mumbai Police stated that the accused allegedly operated from an office of Al Shifa Travels in Masjid Bunder (West).

'Accused collected Rs 90,000 from each candidate, then fled'

The accused lured citizens with promises of overseas jobs.

"The accused took the victims' original passports and biodata, and collected Rs 90,000 from each candidate, but allegedly failed to provide them with jobs," the police statement read.

"After taking the money and the documents, the accused allegedly shut down the office and switched off the mobile phones they were using before fleeing," the statement added.

Following a complaint by the victims, the Pydhonie Police registered a case under Sections 318(4), 336(2), 336(3), 340(2) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.

Pydhonie Police arrest three accused

The police then launched an investigation and used technical analysis to trace the accused. Three suspects were subsequently arrested from different locations.

As per the police statement, Tabrez Alam Ansari was arrested from Haryana, while Mohammed Shamim Ansari was nabbed from Madhubani in Bihar. The third accused, Venkatesh Gangayya Chakle, was arrested from JJ Dormitory on Tandel Street in Mumbai.

Police recover 50 passports in job fraud probe

During the operation, officials recovered a large number of documents and electronic devices allegedly linked to the fraud.

The seized items included 50 Indian passports, six computers/laptops, nine mobile phones, 13 bank cheque books, debit cards, Aadhaar cards, PAN cards and voter ID cards, and two fake appointment letters.

The investigation so far has found that 10 people were allegedly cheated. Police suspect that the number of victims could exceed 50.

The police have appealed to anyone who may have been similarly cheated by the accused to immediately contact Pydhonie Police Station.

The operation was carried out by a team led by Senior Police Inspector Lakshmikant Salunkhe, along with Police Inspector Ajay Kadam, investigating officer PSI Govind Fad, API Razzak Sheikh, and other police personnel.
