The century-old tree that collapsed in Byculla on Monday
Vehicular damage was witnessed across the city after heavy rainfall and gusty winds led to the collapse of trees on Friday and Monday. Eyewitnesses expressed relief that no lives were lost in any of the incidents but ardently urged the authorities to maintain roadside trees to prevent further such mishaps.
Four to five vehicles were damaged after a huge tree on fell down on Dr Mascarenhas Road on Monday morning. According to Ahmed Memon, the owner of a shop in Byculla, the tree was at least over a century old. "If it had fallen on the other side, four or five shops, including mine, would have been flattened. The tree probably fell because its base had been cemented."
The tree collapsed inside Manju Tower Society in Lokhandwala, Andheri West
A tree uprooted amid heavy rainfall and gusty winds crushed three parked vehicles inside the Manju Tower Society in Lokhandwala, Andheri West on Monday. Surjeet Singh Dadiala, the owner of one of the vehicles, a 2016 Mercedes E250 alleged that this was the second time in two years that his car had been damaged by a fallen tree, despite repeatedly raising concerns over its condition with the society's managing committee.
Strong winds on Sunday morning uprooted or damaged four trees within minutes at King's Circle, Matunga East. Over the weekend, a total of eight trees were uprooted or damaged in the King's Circle area.
Fortunately, no one was injured in the incidents, but eyewitnesses said that as many as eight cars were damaged. On Sunday, the tree, located diagonally opposite Bhanu Kunj, fell onto Hormasji Adenwala Road towards the building.
The banyan tree that fell near the Vastu Shubh B building in Andheri East
On Friday, July 3, a banyan tree came crashing down near the Vastu Shubh B building, damaging three to four cars. Advocate Anil D'Souza, a resident, said, "Around 10.45 am, my son was about to leave for college despite an orange alert. I repeatedly called him and asked him not to step out, and also informed the house staff and his mother. These calls delayed him by a few minutes. At 11.04 am, the tree suddenly collapsed. The driver was inside our car, which was lightly damaged, and he escaped unhurt. The roots had likely weakened due to cement work around the base."
