Two 19-year-old boys died after drowning in a quarry in Mumbai's Dahisar East area on Saturday morning, according to the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB).
The incident was reported to the MFB Control Room at around 10:26 am. According to the MFB, the incident occurred at Shaikh Khadan in Ketki Pada, an area that falls under the jurisdiction of the National Park.
According to the MFB, the two boys had fallen into a quarry with an estimated depth of 10 to 15 feet. Fire brigade personnel carried out a rescue operation and retrieved both victims from the water before shifting them to BDBA Shatabdi Hospital for medical treatment.
According to the MFB, Dr. Mantri, Assistant Medical Officer (AMO) at BDBA Shatabdi Hospital, confirmed that both victims were declared brought dead.
The deceased have been identified as Piyush Gupta, 19, and Om Ankush Singh, 19.
Further details regarding the circumstances leading to the incident are awaited from the local police, according to the MFB.
Meanwhile, the highly decomposed bodies of two boys swept away in the swollen Kamwari River in Maharashtra's Thane district last week were found washed ashore in neighbouring Palghar, police said on Saturday.
The victims were among three boys swept away by strong currents in the river in Bhiwandi on July 5 and 6, prompting an extensive rescue operation hampered by incessant rainfall.
"The bodies were found washed ashore on Friday after being carried away by flood waters nearly 80 km. They were in a highly decomposed state," the official said.
The bodies have been sent to a government hospital in Palghar for post-mortem examination, and relatives of the two missing boys have been called in for identification, the official said.
A search operation was undertaken with the help of the NDRF, and efforts are on to trace another boy who went missing in the river during the same period.
