Mumbai faces water supply concerns as tanker operators suspend services (File pic)
Mumbai's water tanker operators have suspended services and taken their vehicles off the roads in protest against action initiated by authorities over groundwater extraction and regulatory compliance issues, raising concerns about a potential disruption in water supply across parts of the city.
The agitation comes amid a crackdown linked to the implementation of Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA) norms. Tanker operators have alleged that the regulations are being enforced in a harsh manner without adequate consultation with industry stakeholders, threatening the livelihood of operators and the water needs of millions of citizens who depend on tanker supply.
In a memorandum submitted to the authorities, a copy of which is with Mid-Day, tanker operators have demanded an immediate halt to coercive action against water suppliers in Mumbai. Among their key demands are the formation of a joint committee comprising government officials and representatives of the tanker industry to find a practical and lawful solution and measures to ensure an uninterrupted water supply by allowing tanker services to continue operations.
The operators have urged the government to introduce uniform and practical policies across Maharashtra instead of what they claim is selective action targeting Mumbai-based operators.
"This is to inform all concerned authorities, consumers, commercial establishments, housing societies, industries, and the general public that all water tanker operators across Mumbai have taken their vehicles off-road and have suspended water transportation services throughout Mumbai with effect from 12 am on 7th June 2026 until further notice," Ankur Sharma, spokesperson of the Mumbai Water Tanker Association, told mid-day.
