A Mumbai court on Friday formally framed charges against Mohammad Shariful Islam, a Bangladeshi national accused of attacking actor Saif Ali Khan at his residence in Bandra in January last year. The development marks a significant step in the case, as the accused will now face trial over the alleged assault and related offences.

Additional Sessions Judge G P Deshmukh framed the charges after Islam appeared before the court and pleaded not guilty. Following the framing of charges, the case will proceed to the trial stage, where the prosecution will present evidence and witnesses in support of its allegations.

Accused faces multiple charges

According to the case, Islam has been charged under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) relating to robbery involving the use of a deadly weapon to cause grievous hurt.

He will also face a charge of house trespass, in connection with the alleged entry into Khan's residence. In addition, the accused faces charges under relevant provisions of the Foreigners Act and the Passport (Entry into India) Rules.

Islam has denied the allegations against him by pleading not guilty.

What happened at Saif Ali Khan's Bandra home?

The alleged incident took place in the early hours of January 16 last year, when an intruder reportedly entered Saif Ali Khan's 12th-floor apartment in an upscale residential building in Bandra.

During the alleged confrontation, Khan was repeatedly stabbed with a knife.

The actor suffered serious injuries and was subsequently rushed to Lilavati Hospital for emergency medical treatment.

Khan underwent surgery at the hospital following the attack. He was discharged five days later after receiving treatment for his injuries.

Police arrested accused two days after attack

Mumbai Police arrested Mohammad Shariful Islam two days after the alleged attack. Investigators subsequently proceeded with the case against him, alleging that he had unlawfully entered the actor's residence and attacked him during the incident.

The case has since attracted considerable public attention because of the nature of the alleged attack and the involvement of a prominent Bollywood actor.

Trial to determine allegations

With the court now framing charges, the matter will move forward to trial.

The prosecution will be required to establish its case through documentary evidence, witness testimony and other material presented before the court.

The accused, meanwhile, will have an opportunity to contest the allegations and present his defence during the proceedings.

The charges framed by the court are allegations at this stage, and Islam is presumed innocent unless proven guilty through the judicial process.
