The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai and neighbouring districts, forecasting heavy rainfall at isolated places over the next two days as the monsoon remains active over Konkan.
The forecast, issued at midnight on Tuesday, is valid from 8.30 am IST each day until 8.30 am the following day.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Mumbai, the city is likely to receive heavy rainfall at isolated places on Tuesday and Wednesday, with a "very likely" probability on both days. From Thursday to Saturday, the rainfall intensity is expected to ease to light to moderate, with the probability of rain remaining "very likely".
Thane is under a similar warning, with heavy rainfall at isolated places forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday. Light to moderate rain is likely from Thursday through Saturday.
In Raigad, heavy rainfall at isolated places is forecast on Tuesday, while Wednesday could see heavy rain at a few places.
Both days have been assigned a "very likely" probability. Moderate rain is likely thereafter through Saturday.
Palghar is expected to receive moderate rainfall on Tuesday and Wednesday, followed by light to moderate rain from Thursday to Saturday. The probability of rain remains "very likely" throughout the period.
The weather outlook for the rest of Maharashtra on Tuesday varies across regions.
Moderate rain is predicted in the ghat areas of Nashik, while Ahilyanagar, Pune, Kolhapur, Satara, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar are likely to receive light to moderate rain.
The ghat sections of Pune and Satara are under a warning for heavy rainfall at isolated places.
Sangli, Solapur, Parbhani, Beed, Hingoli, Nanded, Latur, and Dharashiv are expected to receive light rain.
Several districts in Vidarbha, including Akola, Amravati, Bhandara, Buldhana, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Gondia, Nagpur, Wardha, Washim, and Yavatmal, currently have no warning.
The IMD has warned of several possible impacts during periods of heavy rainfall, including localised inundation or flooding in low-lying and urban areas, uprooting of weak trees, and collapse of old structures.
Flash floods, disruption to road, rail, air, and ferry transport, and water flowing over low-lying roads and bridges are also possible.
The weather conditions could damage horticulture and standing crops, while landslides, or mudslides may occur at vulnerable locations. The IMD has also warned of rough sea conditions along the Konkan coast and squally weather over coastal districts.
Citizens have been advised to check traffic conditions before travelling and follow advisories issued by local authorities.
The IMD has advised people to avoid staying in vulnerable structures and remain away from open fields and tall trees during thunderstorms. Electrical appliances should be unplugged during lightning activity, and people should stay away from water bodies and objects that conduct electricity.
Farmers have been advised to harvest mature crops at the earliest, support young fruit plants and vegetables to prevent lodging, and cover harvested produce if threshing is delayed.
They have also been advised to shift stored grains to safe locations, avoid irrigation and chemical sprays, and ensure proper drainage of excess water from fields.
Cattle and other farm animals should be kept indoors during thunderstorms and lightning, the IMD said.
