Residents living on the one-kilometre stretch between Vale Bus Stop and the Shepali area in Gorai are finally breathing easy after the restoration of their water supply, ending a struggle that lasted for 12 years. For over a decade, locals walked nearly four kilometres to fetch drinking water.

The residents had also repeatedly approached BMC through letters, complaints, and follow-ups, seeking a solution to the persistent water shortage. Earlier this year, members of the Gorai Gaothan Panchayat again had written to the civic body in March, requesting urgent repairs. However, they received no response.

MLA intervenes

The breakthrough came after the local MLA was informed about the issue. Following intervention, inspections revealed that sections of the water pipeline were clogged with rust and other materials, restricting the flow of water. After cleaning the pipes and adjusting water pressure, BMC workers managed to restore the supply. Since Sunday, residents have been receiving water every evening, bringing much-needed relief to hundreds of families.

Voices

Royston Godinho, member of Gorai Gaothan Panchayat,
‘We can't even express in words the happiness we have felt since Sunday. We are now getting water every morning. All those in the area have now been relieved of the pressure which consumed us for the last 12 years. We don't need to physically exert ourselves for water, which is the most basic necessity for any human.'

Rossi D'Souza, Gorai Gaothan Panchayat member,
‘The MLA of our area has helped us a lot. After our pleas went unheard at the BMC offices, he had helped us with the issue. Even recently he had written letters to the BMC about the issue, which we are very thankful for.'

mid-day contacted Praful Tambe R Central ward assistant commissioner, for a comment on why such a delay occurred, but did not receive a response by press time.
