After not receiving a significant amount of rain following two days of heavy rain earlier this week, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty winds for Saturday and Sunday.
Mumbai reported a significant drop in rainfall in the 48 hours between Wednesday and Friday, after heavy to very heavy rainfall lashed across the city between Tuesday and Wednesday morning.
IMD data revealed that between 8 am on Thursday and Friday, Colaba and Santacruz received only 5.4 mm and 0 mm of rainfall, respectively.
Similarly, in the 24 hours between 8 am on Wednesday and Thursday, 26 mm of rainfall was recorded at Colaba, and 13.6 mm was recorded at Santacruz, whose weather station's readings are considered those of Mumbai. Effectively, June's cumulative rainfall has jumped by one percentage point since Tuesday's heavy downpour, according to official information.
By this time last year, Colaba and Santacruz had already received 542 mm and 478.1 mm of rainfall. However, so far this year, the former spot has received 354.5 mm, and the latter 284.2 mm, indicating a deficit for now. Colaba observatory has recorded a departure of -22.6 per cent of average rainfall, and Santacruz -34.7 per cent. IMD figures indicate that until Friday, the Colaba weather station has recorded 16.92 per cent of average seasonal rainfall, and Santacruz 12.26 per cent.

In May, IMD's long-range forecast indicated a weak monsoon season for India, expecting below-normal rainfall, at approximately 90 per cent of the average seasonal rainfall figures of the past decade. A senior IMD official said, "Last year, Mumbai had reported the earliest arrival of the southwest monsoon."
Last year, Mumbai recorded its wettest May in 107 years, with the early arrival of the monsoon by May 26, 2025. Last May, the Colaba and Santacruz observatories recorded 509 mm and 395 mm of rainfall, respectively.
