Mumbai is expected to witness partly cloudy skies across the city and suburbs on Sunday, with the possibility of light rain during the evening and night hours, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The weather department has also issued a nowcast warning indicating the likelihood of isolated rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in some areas.

IMD Issues Yellow Warning for Mumbai

In its nowcast warning issued at 7 am on June 21, the IMD placed Mumbai under a yellow alert valid for the next three hours. The department stated that light to moderate rainfall is very likely to occur at isolated locations, with a possibility of thunderstorms and lightning in some parts of the district.

Residents have been advised to take necessary precautions, particularly while travelling or engaging in outdoor activities during periods of adverse weather.

Warm and Humid Conditions Persist

Despite the possibility of rainfall, temperatures are expected to remain relatively high. According to the IMD forecast, Mumbai's maximum temperature is likely to reach around 35 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature may hover near 29 degrees Celsius.

Weather observations recorded on Sunday indicated that the city continued to experience warm overnight conditions. The Colaba observatory registered a minimum temperature of 25.8 degrees Celsius, while the Santacruz observatory recorded 26.7 degrees Celsius.

The elevated night-time temperatures have contributed to humid and uncomfortable conditions across several parts of the city, particularly in densely populated neighbourhoods where heat retention remains high.

Light Rainfall Reported in Several Areas

Parts of Mumbai received light showers on Sunday morning. However, the rainfall was not widespread enough to bring a significant drop in temperatures or humidity levels.

The cloud cover associated with the rain activity helped reduce daytime heating in some locations. The IMD has indicated that isolated showers may occur again later in the day, especially in coastal areas and suburban pockets.

Weather experts expect a combination of cloudy skies, intermittent rain and high humidity to dominate Mumbai's weather pattern over the next few days as monsoon activity gradually strengthens.

Mumbai's Air Quality Remains Satisfactory

While weather conditions remained humid, Mumbai's air quality continued to stay within the "Satisfactory" category on Sunday.

According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board's (CPCB) SAMEER application, the city's overall Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 51. An AQI between 51 and 100 falls under the satisfactory category, indicating that air quality is generally acceptable and poses minimal health concerns for most residents.

Pollution Levels Stable Across Mumbai and MMR

AQI readings across Mumbai's monitoring stations remained largely stable. Bandra Kurla Complex recorded an AQI of 47, Ghatkopar reported 49, Byculla registered 57, and Colaba recorded 59. Navi Mumbai and Thane also remained within the satisfactory category with AQI readings of 48 and 58, respectively.

Among the cleaner locations, Malad recorded an AQI of 46, placing it in the "Good" category. Mulund reported an AQI of 20, while Chembur recorded 37, both indicating relatively cleaner air.

The latest data suggests that air quality has remained stable across the wider Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Environmental experts attribute the favourable conditions to periodic rainfall activity and weather patterns that help disperse airborne pollutants.

With light rain likely, warm temperatures and high humidity expected to continue, Mumbai residents can anticipate typical monsoon conditions over the coming days, while air quality is expected to remain within acceptable levels.
