Traffic on the Western Express Highway and adjoining roads could face fresh disruption after the monsoon, with the BMC planning repair and noise-barrier work on two key western-suburb flyovers. The civic body has floated a tender estimated at Rs 46.04 crore, excluding GST, for major repairs and noise barriers on the Balasaheb Thackeray flyover, also known as the Jogeshwari South ROB, and the MTNL flyover in Goregaon.
The Jogeshwari South ROB will undergo structural repairs, while the work proposed for the MTNL flyover is limited to noise barriers because piling work for the ongoing Coastal Road North project is taking place on either side, according to a senior civic official.
The 2.2-km flyover connects Jogeshwari West, near Swami Vivekanand Road, with Jogeshwari East and the Western Express Highway. The flyover was opened to traffic in 2015, while extensions at both ends are being constructed separately. A senior civic official told mid-day, "MMRDA has started work on construction of the extensions to the bridge and has asked BMC to conduct a structural audit of the existing flyover. Since the time of its inauguration in 2016-17, no work has been carried out on this bridge."
A structural audit conducted by IIT-Bombay found that major repairs were required.
The proposed work includes:
. Resurfacing
. Repair and replacement of expansion joints
. Replacement of bearings
. Structural steel repairs
. Anti-corrosive painting of steel members
. Other structural strengthening work
. Installation of noise barriers
The work is proposed between October and December 2026. "Work will be carried out quickly between October and December to minimise traffic snarls," the official said.
The 450-metre MTNL flyover in Goregaon West will also get noise barriers under the BMC tender. A senior civic official told mid-day, "Since piling work is going on on either side of the MTNL flyover, we are only installing noise barriers. The flyover was earlier slated for demolition, but the decision has been stayed. So we have decided to go ahead with the planned work and install the noise barriers." Noise barriers will be installed after piling work for the ongoing Coastal Road North project is completed, the official said.
