Western Railway (WR) General Manager Ramashray Pandey, who has recently taken charge, has urged his teams to throw open the much-delayed Jogeshwari Terminus for passenger train operations by January 2027.

The Jogeshwari Terminus has been under construction for several years, but the project has been delayed due to several reasons. The overall physical progress of the project is at 55 per cent.

Pandey, who took over in April 2026, visited the site to review work, carried out a detailed inspection, and said all teams have to work together to get the work done proactively with no further delays.

With six months to go until the January 2027 deadline, the focus will now shift to accelerating track work and completing structural finishing across all facilities. The general manager's on-site intervention is expected to inject a fresh sense of urgency into the project's execution.

The project site, which is located close to Ram Mandir suburban railway station and Jogeshwari East Metro stop on the Red Line 7

The project, sanctioned in 2022-23 at an estimated cost of Rs 76 crore, is being developed to facilitate platform-returning mail/express trains and enable smooth terminal movement - a significant capacity enhancement for the WR network in Mumbai.

What work is pending?

Among the key structures, the G+2 allied building is 90 per cent complete, with structural work finished and finishing works currently underway. The G+3 station building stands at 40 per cent completion, with the roof slab cast and the rest of the structural and architectural work yet to be executed. Platform walls for all three platforms are 70 per cent complete with minor balance works in progress. The cover over platform (COP) has also reached 70 per cent completion, with columns already erected.

The critical component

Track work, spanning 3.5 km, is 10 per cent complete, with material procurement underway. Given that track laying is essential for the commencement of operations, this will likely be the most closely watched component in the months ahead.

Civil, underground work underway

The underground (UG) Water Tank is 80 per cent complete, with raft, walls, waterproofing, and slab reinforcement binding in progress. Drainage and RCC Box Drain works are 30 per cent complete, with 738 metres finished so far. The foot overbridge extension of six metres has received General Arrangement Drawing (GAD) approval and is set to begin execution shortly.

Approvals are largely in place

Most critical drawings - including those for the COP, allied and station buildings, UG Tank, and nullah - have been approved. Drawings for the circulating area are currently under approval, and clearance is expected soon.

First in decades

The new Jogeshwari Terminus will decongest existing terminal stations (Bandra, Dadar, and Mumbai Central). Full-fledged independent rail termini last came up in Mumbai at Kurla LTT in 1991 and Bandra Terminus in 1992, after which several stations like Dadar (western) and Panvel were upgraded to mail express termini, but not new ones constructed.

Location is everything

The new terminus, located close to Ram Mandir suburban railway station, is about 250 m from the nearest Metro station, Jogeshwari East on the Red Line 7, which can be accessed via Ram Mandir Road (Lotus Corporate Park) and will also have cab zones, auto zones, along with Ola/Uber pick up/drop points and a parking zone.
