Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday said the state government was in touch with people from Maharashtra stranded in Nepal following devastating flash floods and was coordinating with the Centre to bring them back safely, reported the PTI.
CM Fadnavis said the state government was monitoring the situation and working with the Union government and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to assist those affected.
The Chief Minister said the state government did not yet have an exact figure for the number of Maharashtra residents stranded in Nepal.
"There are some people from Maharashtra who are stranded in Nepal after the flash floods," Fadnavis said while speaking to reporters, according to the PTI.
He said Disaster Management Minister Girish Mahajan was overseeing the situation, while the Chief Minister's Office was also helping the families of those stranded.
Fadnavis said authorities had managed to establish contact with some Maharashtra residents who had travelled to Tibet.
He added that some tourists had travelled towards Mansarovar, but their usual route back was affected by the floods.
"We are in talks with people as some of the tourists had gone to see Mansarovar and now their regular route to return is affected due to the floods," he said, as per the PTI.
The government is working on alternative arrangements to bring the affected tourists back, he added.
Fadnavis said the Maharashtra government had discussed the situation with the Union government.
He also said the Ministry of External Affairs was assisting with efforts to establish contact with stranded people and facilitate their return, the news agency reported.
The state government is continuing to coordinate with the Centre as authorities assess the situation in flood-hit areas.
CM Fadnavis said that Maharashtra remained on alert and urged relatives of people believed to be stranded in Nepal to contact the state government, as per the PTI.
Disaster Management Minister Girish Mahajan has also appealed to families to share information about their relatives so that authorities can verify their whereabouts and provide the necessary assistance.
The Chief Minister reiterated that the state government was monitoring developments closely, although the exact number of stranded Maharashtra residents was still being established.
