A worker was injured in a blast at a steel manufacturing company in Boisar in Maharashtra's Palghar district on Monday, officials said.

The incident occurred around 10.45 am at an induction furnace in the steel melting unit of Viraj Profiles Pvt Ltd in an industrial area in Boisar, District Disaster Management Cell chief Vivekanand Kadam said.

Blast damages plant shed

The blast damaged several roofing sheets on the shed of the steel plant, Kadam said.

A 45-year-old crane operator sustained minor injuries in the incident. Emergency response teams provided first aid at the site before he was taken to a hospital for further treatment, the official said.

Probe underway to determine cause

Local emergency services and industrial safety officials were examining the site and investigating the incident to determine the exact cause of the blast, Kadam said.

Fire breaks out at commercial building in Kandivali

In a separate incident, a fire broke out at a four-storey commercial building in Mumbai's Kandivali area early on Monday, officials said.

At least 11 persons were rescued from the premises, they said, adding that there were no casualties.

The blaze was reported at Abhirai Hotel on Kandivali Station Road at 4.14 am, the officials said.

The entire building was smoke-logged, following which firefighters rescued 11 persons through the staircase from a lodging house on the second floor, a civic official said.

The blaze was confined to electrical wiring and installations, wooden furniture, tarpaulin, bamboo, and aluminium and plastic decorative sheets of the commercial building, he said.

"No one was injured in the blaze," the official said.

At least four fire engines and other firefighting vehicles were deployed, and the blaze was brought under control by 6.07 am, he said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, officials said.

Fire breaks out in basement of Income Tax Office building

Meanwhile, A fire broke out in the basement of Aayakar Bhavan on Maharshi Karve Road in Mumbai on Monday afternoon, prompting an evacuation operation for people stranded on the upper floors of the building. No injuries were reported.

The incident was reported to the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) at around 2.01 pm on August 17. The fire brigade declared it a Level-I fire at 2.10 pm.

According to the fire brigade, the blaze was confined to the basement of the building, which comprises a basement, ground floor and seven upper floors. Firefighting operations were underway as officials worked to prevent the blaze from spreading to other parts of the structure.

An evacuation operation was also underway to bring people stranded on the upper floors to safety. Teams from the Mumbai Fire Brigade were deployed along with personnel from the police, Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST), 108 ambulance services and BMC ward staff.
