Thane and Konkan region witness heavy rain

IMD issues an orange alert for Jalgaon, Nashik, Pune, Kolhapur and Satara; Yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg

Thane, Kalyan, Badlapur, Ambernath and parts of the Konkan region received heavy rainfall on Thursday, accompanied by thunder and gusty winds. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has also issued an orange alert for Jalgaon, Nashik, Pune, Kolhapur and Satara. Additionally, the weather department has issued yellow alerts for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg.

While the IMD had issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar on Thursday, it predicted a dry weather for May 17. For Thane and Palghar, the weather bureau had predicted: "Heat wave in isolated pockets. Possibility of light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms towards the afternoon/evening. Very likely." For Mumbai, it predicted "Hot and humid conditions. Possibility of light rain or thundershower towards evening. Very likely."

"Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, gusty winds (50-60 kmph), and hail, at isolated places are very likely (in Mumbai and MMR)," said the IMD in a forecast. Abhijit Modak, weather enthusiast posted on X (formerly twitter): "wind #storm with Thunderstorm & light hailstones hits Badlapur 15km tall clouds over Badlapur.

Earlier during the day, Vagaries of Weather, a popular private weather blog, predicted rains for MMR and chances of showers in the city and MMR till Saturday. The forecast by Vagaries of Weather stated: "Today till Saturday there is some chance for thunderstorms for Mumbai, Navi Mumbai Thane/Raigad/Palghar/Pune/Nashik/Satara/Kolhapur and parts of Ratnagiri/Sindhudurg regions. Thane district has higher chances than Mumbai city." It further said: "South peninsular region is likely to see daily rain/thunderstorms, with moderate-heavy rain over the next 5-7 days.
