Thane civic body launches drive against illegal water connections in Mumbra, Diva

The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) on Thursday launched a three-day special drive against unauthorized water connections in the Mumbra and Diva areas, targeting illegal water usage by commercial establishments, service stations, private tanker operators, and unauthorized domestic consumers.

As per the officials, the special drive began on July 30 and is being carried out by the civic body's Water Supply Department through two dedicated teams operating in the Mumbra and Diva ward committee areas.

Officials said that the criminal cases will be initiated against those found using unauthorized water connections after the illegal connections are disconnected.

Furthermore, according to the civic administration, one team has been assigned to inspect the Diva ward committee area, covering Kalyan Phata to Y-Junction, while another team will monitor the Mumbra ward committee area from Y-Junction to the Mumbra Fire Station. The teams are headed by executive engineers.

The drive aims at curbing water theft and reducing leakage

The civic body said the drive is aimed at curbing water theft, reducing leakage, and ensuring adequate water pressure for authorized consumers.

As part of its ongoing enforcement efforts, the Water Supply Department has taken action against 65 unauthorized water connections across the Mumbra-Diva region between May and July 2026.

In May, inspections conducted in Ganesh Nagar, Sonetala Nagar, Agasan Village, Lalani Naka, and Kosa Village resulted in the disconnection of 21 illegal water connections. During the same period, officials also removed 40 unauthorized tap valves that had been directly installed on water mains.

In June, the campaign covered Mahalaxmi Nagar, Shilphata, Sadguru Nagar, Lalani Naka, and Gulab Park, where 20 unauthorized water connections were disconnected.

The drive continued in July with inspections in Kosa Village, Shivaji Nagar, Badekar Mala, Diva East and nearby areas, leading to action against another 24 illegal water connections.

According to the Water Supply Department, the sustained enforcement campaign has helped reduce unauthorized tapping of water pipelines, control water theft and leakage, and improve the distribution of water to legitimate consumers.

The civic administration has further appealed to residents to obtain water connections only through the prescribed legal process and urged citizens to report any unauthorized water connections to the Municipal Corporation. Officials said strict action against water theft will continue in the coming days.
