A major accident was averted during the early hours of Friday after a brake failure caused a loaded Hyva truck to roll backwards and collide with a chemical tanker on Ghodbunder Road in Thane West.

According to the Thane Municipal Corporation's (TMC) Disaster Management Cell, the incident was reported at around 3:35 am near Hanuman Mandir, behind Jakat Naka on Ghodbunder Road.

While briefing about the incident, the officials from the Disaster Management Cell highlighted that the Tata Hyva truck, carrying 46 tonnes of crushed stone (khadi) from Vasai to Thane, experienced a brake failure while climbing an incline. Following the brake failure, the vehicle started to roll backwards and rammed into a tanker that was following behind.

Tanker was carrying 27,000 litres of flammable chemical

The tanker was travelling from Gujarat to Khopoli and was loaded with 27,000 litres of acetone, a highly flammable industrial chemical. Despite the impact, there was no leakage from the tanker, preventing a potentially hazardous situation.

The collision caused a large quantity of crushed stone from the Hyva truck to spill onto the road, disrupting traffic movement. However, no injuries were reported.

Swift response by the authorities

Following the accident, personnel from the Thane City Traffic Police, Thane Fire Brigade, Disaster Management Cell, and the Majivada-Manpada Ward Disaster Management Team rushed to the spot. A crane, a rescue vehicle, utility vehicles, and a JCB machine were deployed to clear the accident site.

The damaged vehicles were shifted to the roadside with the help of a crane, while the spilt construction material was removed using a JCB and manual labour. The road was subsequently cleared and reopened for traffic.
