The body of an unidentified man was found in a roadside drain in Maharashtra's Thane city, a civic official said on Saturday, reported PTI.
The body was spotted in a drain behind a hotel in the Mumbra area on Friday night, following which local authorities launched a retrieval operation, reported PTI.
"With the assistance of police personnel and fire brigade staff, the body was safely removed from the drain and handed over to the Mumbra police for further action," said Yasin Tadvi, chief of the Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) of the Thane Municipal Corporation.
The deceased appeared to be in his mid-30s, an official said, adding the police have registered a case of accidental death, reported PTI.
In another case, the body of a man who drowned in Ilthanpada dam at Digha in Navi Mumbai was recovered on Friday following a multi-agency search and rescue operation, a senior civic official said, reported PTI.
The Airoli fire station had received an alert about a youth drowning in the dam on Thursday, following which a search and rescue operation was started, Sachin Kadam, Navi Mumbai Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) chief, told PTI, reported PTI.
The search operation, which was suspended on Thursday night due to poor visibility, resumed on Friday morning and led to the retrieval of the body from the dam waters at around 3:20 pm, he added, reported PTI.
The on-site deployment included one rescue vehicle each from Airoli Fire Brigade and MIDC Fire Brigade, and a team from the Thane Disaster Response Force (TDRF), Kadam stated.
Meanwhile, one person died and five others sustained serious injuries in a collision between a motorcycle and a car in Maharashtra's Beed district, police said on Thursday, reported PTI.
The accident took place near Wadachiwadi in Shirur Kasar tehsil on Kalyan-Vishakhapatnam National Highway on Wednesday evening, they said.
The injured persons have been admitted to a nearby hospital.
According to the police, a car with four occupants and a motorcycle carrying two persons collided, leaving one of the two-wheeler riders dead at the scene.
Citing statements of the victims, police said the car flipped four times, adding that a probe into the accident is underway.
