A major mishap was averted on Tuesday at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) after two suburban local trains were routed onto the same track, officials said.
The incident unfolded when a train coming from Badlapur was taken on PF 5 instead of PF 4 which was occupied by another local.
Railway officials clarified that there was a signal separating the two local trains. The CSMT internal home signal for the suburban platforms was red, so the motorman stopped the incoming train. The distance between the two trains was over 120 metres, ensuring there was no immediate risk of collision.
A spokesperson for Central Railway confirmed the incident and said an inquiry has been initiated.
Train movement between platforms 5 and 8 was halted at 3.18 pm as a precautionary measure. Railway staff then carried out a controlled "backing" of the trains to resolve the situation.
Operations resumed within an hour after the tracks were cleared, officials said.
