Air India says 17 injured after Phuket-Delhi flight suffers sudden altitude loss; DGCA probe underway

Air India on Tuesday said that its Phuket-Delhi flight AI2379 experienced a sudden loss of altitude during the cruise phase of the journey, leaving 17 people injured before the aircraft landed safely in the national capital.

In its latest update issued at 6.50 pm, the airline said the Airbus A320neo aircraft was carrying 137 passengers and eight crew members when it encountered the momentary in-flight event. The aircraft continued its journey normally after the sudden loss of altitude and landed safely in Delhi at 11.07 am.

According to the airline, 13 passengers and four crew members sustained injuries and were taken to hospitals for medical evaluation.

"As of 6:50 pm on August 4, five passengers have been discharged, while the remaining individuals continue to receive treatment and care. Air India teams remain at the hospitals and are in close contact with those affected to provide all necessary assistance and support," the airline said in a statement.

Earlier in the day, preliminary reports had indicated that the aircraft lost around 300 feet in altitude after encountering turbulence during the cruise phase of the flight. Initial information suggested that 15 people had been injured, including passengers and cabin crew members. However, Air India's latest update revised the total number of injured to 17.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched an investigation into the incident. Air India said the relevant regulatory authorities have been informed in accordance with established safety and regulatory procedures.

Aircraft manufacturer notified as DGCA begins investigation

The airline also confirmed that the aircraft manufacturer has been notified and that it is fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation.

"Air India's foremost priority remains the safety and well-being of its passengers and crew. We will continue to support those affected and their families and will work closely with the relevant authorities throughout the course of the investigation," the airline spokesperson said.

While incidents of turbulence are not uncommon, cases resulting in injuries to passengers and crew are relatively rare.

Air India has not disclosed the exact cause of the sudden loss of altitude, and the findings will be determined as part of the DGCA's investigation. The airline said it remains committed to extending all necessary assistance to those affected until they recover.
