CP gets showcause notice for not reinstating senior police inspector

The Maharashtra Administrative Tribunal (MAT) has slapped a contempt notice on Mumbai Police Commissioner Dr Satyapal Singh, after he ignored the court's order to reinstate police officer J J Jadhav to his seat as senior police inspector of Mulund police station.

The MAT issued the notice to Singh on Wednesday, saying that his inaction in the matter were in contempt of court orders. The matter will be heard in MAT today, where Singh is expected to submit his say. "Taking suo moto notice of the contempt of court committed by the commissioner of police, the court has issued a show cause notice to him," said JJ Jadhav, the senior inspector who moved court after being unceremoniously unseated.

Earlier this month, Jadhav was suddenly transferred to Special Branch (SB)-I. Phulsingh Pawar, who was earlier posted in SB-I, was told to replace Jadhav. During these developments, Jadhav was on leave as his wife was in the hospital. He was shocked to learn that he had been unceremoniously dropped from his chair, without being asked to formally hand over charge to Pawar. When he demanded an explanation, he was told that he had been transferred for his own protection.

"Why did the department not protect Pawar?" said Jadhav. He knocked on the doors of the MAT, telling them that his transfer was premature, as he had not completed the mandatory three years of his tenure as a senior inspector. On June 4, the MAT cancelled the police department's order and said that Jadhav could continue serving as a senior inspector in Mulund. But department failed to reinstate Jadhav.

Dr Singh was not available for comment. SN Chaudhary, spokesperson Mumbai Police, said, "I am not aware about the MAT notice. I will check." u00a0
