Sixteen Delhi Metro stations in central Delhi, including Lok Kalyan Marg, Rajiv Chowk, Patel Chowk and Central Secretariat, remained closed on Wednesday amid heightened security in view of the ongoing Jantar Mantar protest.
According to IANS, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said that while the stations have been closed for entry and exit, interchange facilities will continue to remain operational at Rajiv Chowk, Mandi House and Central Secretariat, allowing commuters to switch metro lines.
The stations that have been closed are Lok Kalyan Marg, Rajiv Chowk, Patel Chowk, Ramakrishna Ashram Marg, Barakhambha Road, Supreme Court, Seva Teerth, Janpath, Mandi House, Central Secretariat, ITO, Delhi Gate, Indraprastha, Khan Market, Jor Bagh and Shivaji Stadium.
The move comes in the wake of violent clashes on Monday, when thousands of supporters of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and students marched from Jantar Mantar towards Parliament, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged examination irregularities, including the NEET-UG paper leak.
The protests drew students, activists and Opposition leaders seeking accountability in the education system. Delhi Police has since assured a thorough investigation into the violence.
Meanwhile, security has been significantly tightened in and around central Delhi to maintain law and order.
Earlier on Tuesday night, Union Health Minister JP Nadda and Union Minister Jitendra Singh met innovator and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram, shortly after he was shifted there from Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital for further treatment.
Wangchuk was discharged from Safdarjung Hospital earlier in the evening and taken to Medanta in an ambulance under tight security, in compliance with a Delhi High Court order.
He was admitted to the hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU) under the supervision of Dr Sushila Kataria, an internal medicine specialist, according to hospital officials.
The meeting between the two Union ministers and Wangchuk came as the activist continued his indefinite hunger strike, which entered its 25th day on Wednesday.
The CJP continued its sit-in protest at Jantar Mantar on Wednesday, with more supporters joining the agitation overnight as the movement over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations entered its second month.
The protest site remained active despite heightened security in central Delhi following Monday's clashes between demonstrators and police during the CJP's 'Sansad Chalo' march.
