The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued a yellow alert for nine districts in Kerala, warning of heavy rainfall in parts of the state over the coming days.
According to the IMD forecast, the alert has been issued for Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kannur districts.
The ongoing weather activity is expected to affect multiple regions, with localised heavy showers, thundersqualls and heatwave conditions likely in certain areas, as per ANI.
Earlier, the IMD said the Northern Limit of Monsoon currently extends from the Arabian Sea to the Bay of Bengal. Conditions remain favourable for its further advance into Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Lakshadweep and additional parts of the Bay of Bengal over the next few days.
South India is likely to witness thunderstorms and gusty winds, with Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu expected to experience wind speeds of 40-50 kmph.
The weather department added that Kerala and Lakshadweep may witness isolated heavy rainfall, while coastal Andhra Pradesh could experience thundersqualls with wind speeds gusting up to 70 kmph.
Meanwhile, light to moderate rainfall is expected to continue across Northeast India, with isolated heavy showers predicted in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh during the coming week.
Eastern states, including West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, are also likely to witness rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. Isolated thundersqualls have also been predicted in Odisha and Jharkhand, according to ANI.
The IMD advised residents to remain indoors during thunderstorms, avoid waterlogged areas and take precautions against heatwave conditions.
Farmers have also been urged to protect crops from heavy rainfall and hailstorms and ensure livestock are sheltered with an adequate water supply.
With the monsoon steadily advancing across the country, the IMD has urged authorities and citizens to remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines to minimise the impact of extreme weather conditions.
The IMD on Monday issued an orange alert for several districts in Maharashtra, warning of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, light to moderate rainfall and strong gusty winds.
The districts under the orange alert include Dhule, Nandurbar, Nashik, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, Chandrapur and Gondia.
According to the alert, thunderstorms with lightning, light to moderate rainfall and gusty winds reaching speeds of 50 to 60 kmph are very likely to occur at isolated places.
