India has secured supplies of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) through alternative import routes amid concerns over potential shortages caused by the escalating West Asia conflict, government officials said on Wednesday, reported news agency IANS.
Officials stated that shipments sourced from alternative locations are expected to arrive in the country soon, helping maintain stable fuel availability for households and industries despite disruptions in global energy supply chains, reported IANS.
Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said the government has taken proactive steps to secure the country's energy requirements by diversifying import sources beyond West Asia, reported IANS.
According to the minister, India continues to receive energy supplies through multiple sources and shipping routes, ensuring stability in domestic fuel availability despite geopolitical tensions in the region, reported IANS.
He said the government remains committed to safeguarding energy security and ensuring uninterrupted access to essential fuels for households and key sectors of the economy.
Alongside securing alternative imports, Indian refiners have increased domestic production of LPG by around 10 per cent after the government directed oil companies to maximise cooking gas output, reported IANS.
Officials said the move is aimed at strengthening domestic supply and reducing dependence on imported LPG during the ongoing global energy uncertainty, reported IANS.
Major refining companies have stepped up efforts to optimise operations and boost LPG output in response to the government's directive.
Reliance Industries said it is taking steps to maximise LPG production at its refining and petrochemical complexes in Jamnagar, Gujarat.
The company operates the Jamnagar Refinery Complex, considered the largest integrated oil refining hub in the world.
"At a time when global energy markets are experiencing volatility, ensuring uninterrupted access to essential fuels for Indian households remains a national priority," the company said in a statement.
Reliance said its operational teams are working continuously to optimise refinery processes and increase LPG production so that domestic supply remains stable.
Natural gas produced from the KG-D6 Basin will also be diverted to support priority sectors, in line with the government's energy allocation guidelines.
The gas will be used to support sectors such as household cooking gas supply, compressed natural gas (CNG) for transport and piped natural gas (PNG) connections.
Officials said these sectors have been given priority to ensure that households and essential services remain unaffected by global supply disruptions.
Puri assured citizens that domestic gas supplies remain stable despite the ongoing crisis in West Asia, reported IANS.
He said the government has ensured that consumers continue to receive full supplies of CNG and PNG while industries are still receiving about 70 to 80 per cent of their gas requirements.
The minister emphasised that maintaining affordable and uninterrupted energy supply remains a key priority for the government.
According to officials, India is closely monitoring global energy markets and has activated contingency measures to secure fuel supplies and maintain stability in the domestic energy sector amid the continuing geopolitical tensions.
