A 15-year-old boy was killed during a summer cricket training camp in Maharashtra's Solapur district after coming under a pitch roller, police said on Tuesday, adding that following the incident two coaches were booked, reported the PTI.
"A case of culpable homicide has been registered against two cricket coaches and associated cricket bodies after the death of the child," officials said.
The deceased, identified as Aarav alias Viren Chaudhary, died on the morning of May 30 while assisting in pitch preparation at a cricket practice session in Barshi town, the news agency reported.
According to the police, the boy and other children were pulling a heavy pitch roller when the equipment allegedly became unbalanced and he got trapped underneath it, sustaining fatal injuries.
According to officials, the children were carrying out the task on instructions from the coaches, but no adult supervisor was present at the time of the incident.
Preliminary findings suggest that safety measures were not followed and the activity was being conducted without proper oversight.
Barshi city police have registered a case under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
The case has been filed against two coaches and the concerned cricket associations after initial inquiries indicated negligence in allowing minors to handle heavy equipment.
Police officials said further investigation is in progress to determine the exact sequence of events and establish accountability.
In an another incident, last month, a seven-year-old boy had died after allegedly getting trapped inside a lift at a residential building in Nimbaj Nagar on Sinhgad Road in Maharashtra's Pune district, officials said, the ANI had earlier reported.
The incident took place when the child had gone out to play near his home.
The boy's father, Shailesh Dhoot, had told the news agency that the family began searching for Shivansh after he did not return to the playground.
He had said the family became worried when his daughter confirmed that the boy had not reached the play area.
During the search, the boy's mother reportedly noticed that the lift was stuck. On checking, she found the child inside.
The family broke open the lift door and discovered that the boy was trapped between the lift and the passage below.
Fire brigade personnel and police rushed to the spot after being informed. However, the child was declared dead at the scene.
