Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis have announced financial compensation for the families of eight individuals who died after a vehicle plunged into a well in Maharashtra's Solapur district.
The incident occurred in Tandulwadi village, located within the Malshiras taluka, when a jeep carrying devotees veared into a well on private farmland. While eight passengers lost their lives, emergency efforts successfully rescued seven others from the site.
Both federal and state authorities have pledged financial relief to support the affected families and the injured survivors. The Central Government has authorized an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the next of kin of each deceased victim, alongside Rs 50,000 for each injured survivor.
Concurrently, Chief Minister Fadnavis confirmed that the Maharashtra government will provide Rs 5 lakh in financial assistance to the heirs of the deceased.
In a statement released on X (formerly Twitter), the Prime Minister's Office expressed deep condolences to the families, noting that their thoughts are with the bereaved in this hour of grief and offering prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured. President Droupadi Murmu also issued a statement via Rashtrapati Bhavan, describing the incident as extremely heartbreaking and offering prayers for those hospitalised.
Chief Minister Fadnavis confirmed that local administration, including the District Collector and the Superintendent of Police, immediately deployed to the scene to oversee the response. He noted that seven lives were successfully saved and are currently receiving treatment, adding that the state remains in constant communication with local authorities to ensure adequate medical care.
President Droupadi Murmu on Monday expressed her deepest condolences following a tragic accident in Maharashtra's Solapur district, where a jeep plunged into a well, claiming eight lives.
Describing the incident as "extremely heartbreaking," the President offered prayers for the swift recovery of those injured.
An X post from the Rashtrapati Bhavan said, "The news of the deaths of people in a vehicle accident in Solapur district of Maharashtra is extremely heartbreaking. I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved families. I pray for the swift recovery of the injured."
According to the Solapur District Disaster Management Authority, the eight deceased individuals have been identified as Indubai Dashrath Bavche, Pooja Amol Satore, Pooja Balaji Bavche, Ashwini Sandip Bavche, Sanskar Sandip Bavche, Sanskruti Sandip Bavche, Aarav Amol Satore, and Samarth Balaji Bavche. Local authorities are continuing their investigation into the exact cause of the vehicle mishap.
