The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather warning for Maharashtra, forecasting intense rainfall activity across the state over the next week due to active monsoon systems.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Mumbai, said several weather systems are likely to trigger widespread rainfall, including heavy to very heavy spells, particularly over Konkan and the adjoining ghat regions of Madhya Maharashtra.
According to the IMD, the following weather systems are influencing rainfall over Maharashtra:
An offshore trough at mean sea level persists from south Gujarat to Karnataka.
An upper air cyclonic circulation over the north Bay of Bengal is expected to lead to the formation of a low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal around July 3.
A trough extending from this system across central India to the northeast Arabian Sea is expected to influence rainfall patterns.
Under the influence of these systems, widespread rainfall with heavy to very heavy showers at a few places and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places is very likely over Konkan and the ghat regions of Madhya Maharashtra between July 1 and July 7.
Thunderstorms accompanied by moderate to heavy rainfall are expected over parts of Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada, while Vidarbha may witness thunderstorms with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places till July 4.
The IMD has issued district-wise weather warnings for the next five days, placing several districts, particularly in western Maharashtra, under red (take action), orange (be prepared) and yellow (be updated) alerts.
Mumbai, Pune Ghats, and Solapur Ghats have been placed under an orange alert, while Palghar, Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri are under a red alert on certain days during the forecast period.
The weather department has also issued a fishermen's warning, stating that squally weather with wind speeds of 40-50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, is likely along the North Maharashtra and South Maharashtra-Goa coasts from July 1 to July 5.
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea during this period.
The IMD has warned that the heavy rainfall may lead to:
Localised inundation and flooding in low-lying and urban areas
Flash floods and possible riverine flooding
Uprooting of trees, damage to weak structures and landslides in vulnerable areas
Disruptions to road, rail, air and ferry services
Damage to crops, horticulture and plantations
Rough sea conditions along the coast
Lightning during thunderstorms
The IMD has advised residents to:
Check traffic advisories before travelling and avoid low-lying or flood-prone areas.
Stay away from vulnerable structures and landslide-prone hilly terrain.
Avoid venturing into fields or taking shelter under trees during thunderstorms.
Remain alert near rivers, rivulets and floodplains.
The weather department has also advised authorities to take precautionary measures for dam operations, power infrastructure and ensuring smooth public movement.
