A probe has been initiated after three Air India aircraft parked at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport were damaged when ground support equipment was displaced during sudden adverse weather conditions, reported IANS.
According to Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), the incident took place on Sunday at Terminal 2 after strong winds accompanied by heavy rainfall. Ground handling equipment positioned near parked aircraft reportedly shifted from its location and collided with three Air India narrow-body aircraft.
Following the incident, all three aircraft were withdrawn from service for detailed inspections and repairs, officials said.
DIAL also said the displaced equipment belonged to Air India Engineering Services and IndiGo's ground handling operations.
Airport officials said weather conditions deteriorated rapidly and unexpectedly, adding that neither the airport operator nor airlines had received any advance warning from Air Traffic Control (ATC) regarding the sudden change, reported IANS.
Air India has not commented on the incident so far, IANS reported.
However, IANS reports suggest that an aircraft belonging to another operator was also affected due to the severe weather conditions.
Of the three affected Air India aircraft, two are expected to return to operations soon, while repairs on the third aircraft may take longer.
According to IANS, the incident comes amid increasing operational challenges caused by sudden weather disruptions, particularly during intense rainfall and strong winds.
Delhi-NCR witnessed a sudden change in the weather, with rainfall reported across several parts of the region. Visuals from areas around IGI Airport showed heavy showers sweeping multiple localities.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast another spell of very light to light rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching up to 60 kmph on June 11 and 12.
Meanwhile, the IMD has also predicted light to moderate rain and thundershowers in Mumbai and Thane till June 11, along with the possibility of gusty winds and lightning in parts of Maharashtra.
Following the forecast, the IMD has advised city residents to brace for thundershowers, with weather conditions likely to remain unstable over the next few days.
