When someone gets badly injured, he is replaced. But that doesn't hold true for Vivek Gupte, one of the two official scorers on duty for the ongoing Mumbai Test between India and England at Wankhede Stadium.
A day prior to the Test, Gupte suffered a fall at the Andheri Metro station which resulted in a fracture to his right hand.
He also sustained a cut on his upper lip which required seven stitches. But there was no way he was going to miss his scoring assignment.
"I had to be operated on my right hand immediately because my wrist had a major fracture.
"I told the doctors about my Test match opportunity which I got for the first time after doing scoring in first-class cricket for the last 19 years. I somehow convinced them to allow me to live up to my cricket commitment.
"I feel sore, but pain-killers are helping me perform my duties," 58-year-old Gupte, who was forced to score with his left hand, told mid-day yesterday.
It's a tough job to score with one hand on the laptop. I am definitely not used to it, but I decided to go ahead," said the determined Gupte.
Incidentally, all four scorers - Gupte and Rupesh Prabhudesai (official scorers), Subodh Vaidya and Paurnima Apte (scoreboard scorers) are officiating in a Test for the
first time.
