Facing threat of losing out, French teachers sharpen skills

With foreign languages like Mandarin, Spanish and German gaining popularity among Indian youth aspiring to pursue higher education abroad, French instructors from the country conducted their first ever teachers’ congress in the city to learn new methods and technologies for effective teaching of French.

The three-day conference in Mumbai, conducted by the Indian Association of Teachers of French, concluded on Sunday. The event brought together French teachers from 35 cities. “Today, the demand for Mandarin has increased owing to the changing dynamics. But, this is just a phase. French is a popular foreign language and is being spoken in many European countries. The trend will reverse. But teachers need to be motivated and encouraged to seek newer ways of teaching to make learning more interesting,” said Nandita Wagale, president of IATF (west zone).

Anjali Lokur, convener of the conference, felt that by 2050, French will steal a march over Mandarin as the most spoken language in the world. “Mandarin is the most spoken language because of the high population density in that country. It is important that French instructors keep up with the ever-changing world dynamics.”

Lokur said teachers raised problems with the current teaching methodology. “This will help change the way a certain book is published or add more modules to elaborate on specific chapters.”

Since its inception in 1954 in Mumbai, the IATF had never had organised such a conference.
