Even as Aadhaar card enrollment centres have been receiving a good response with over 9 lakh people having enrolled already, the NMMC officials are not sure how many of those who have registered actually reside in the satellite city.

As per records, of the 11,19,447 people in Navi Mumbai, 9,42,222 have enrolled for Aadhaar cards at various centres. But well-placed sources at NMMC said that a lot of people who approached came to the centres are from adjoining areas of Navi Mumbai as centres in their areas were crowded.

Presently 20 centres have been set up by the NMMC at various nodes between Airoli and Belapur. A senior NMMC official, requesting anonymity, said, “Around two to three months ago, we were informed that at certain centres there was a steady inflow of people for enrollment who were not from Navi Mumbai.

We have now made it mandatory that people living in Navi Mumbai should be given first preference and later those coming from adjoining areas should be enrolled.”

The official explained that they are not against people from areas outside Navi Mumbai getting enrolled in the satellite city, but the facilities have been provided for residents of the city primarily.

The NMMC has even decided to start permanent enrollment centres in the ward offices of respective nodes, which have been opened in Belapur, Nerul, Vashi, Koparkhairane and Digha until now.

When contacted Suresh Patil, deputy municipal commissioner in charge of Aadhaar enrollments, said, “We got to know that a lot of people from neighbouring areas of Navi Mumbai had come to get their Aadhaar enrollment done and we requested agencies to give first preference to people of Navi Mumbai. We soon plan to set up permanent centres in the ward offices of Airoli, Ghansoli and Turbhe.” u00a0
