Govinda: I want to intensely explore dark and edgy characters

Sitting to pen down 35 years of his life in the Hindi film industry in his three-part biography, the realisation comes hard for Govinda—showcasing his dancing and comic skills—he has never played a gritty and dark character on screen. Ardently following everything on the web, the Hero No. 1 actor hopes to rectify that by jumping headlong into digital entertainment for some much-needed creative satisfaction.

“Earlier, I didn’t get offers at all. I want to intensely explore dark and edgy characters. But, the offers coming my way now don’t give me the creative satisfaction I seek as an actor,” says the actor.

In the 90s, Govinda was known for portraying light-hearted characters with impeccable comic timing in his movies. While he wants to keep the audience entertained with his usual antics, he doesn’t want to limit himself. “People expect a certain level of performance from me. [I cannot limit myself to only doing fun and entertaining roles like I have done in my films. On the web, I want to explore even those dark and edgy characters like the ones that are creating waves on digital platforms,” says Govinda, adding that he doesn’t want people to judge my performance or “find it lacking in any way”. “I want to play characters that people can identify with.”
