Smriti Irani
The iconic show Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi returns with a ride of nostalgia, as the show begins with archival footage of temples and Ganeshji's idol that every show helmed by Ektaa Kapoor has, it not only brings back the memories but also makes the viewer time travel to the 2000s when the K series were a massive hit. The first few minutes of the episode take you back to the old days, when you would find yourself sitting with your family after dinner, waiting for the show to begin.
The show's second season premiered at 10.30 p.m. at its original time slot. This time, the title song of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi was broadcast not only on Star Plus but also on its sibling station JioHotstar, in keeping with the modern era. Between the theme song and the archival temple run, the camera focused on the sacred Tulsi plant being watered by Tulsi Virani herself, with a conch echoing in the background.
The nostalgic ride with introduction
The protagonist, Tulsi Virani, was not introduced to the audience all at once, unlike the original Kyunki, which gained popularity 25 years ago. The viewers first saw her lips reciting the Gayatri Mantra, followed by her forehead adorned with a bindi and sindoor in her parting hair. The focus then shifted to the Tulsi plant, where Tulsi explained the various properties of the sacred emblem.
Fans surely shed a tear seeing the old footage of Baa and Tulsi as Smriti (Tulsi) remembers Baa. She recalls how Baa taught her everything when she first came to the Virani mansion after marrying Mihir. The scenes of Baa and Tulsi become a reminder of how the show has come a long way. It appears Smriti Irani has never stopped being Tulsi Virani. She has returned to her classic persona with absolute finesse.
Ketki Dave returns as Daksha Chachi, Tulsi's chatty cousin saas, whose favourite catchphrase is "Ara-ra." Daksha Chachi keeps up with the latest gossip on social media. She has now become tech-savvy. She follows Biral Dayani, a popular paparazzi on the internet. Guessing who it is will not earn you any points.
Sanskars remain unchanged: the greeting Jai Shree Krishna has returned, as has the practice of caressing the elders' feet. Even the background score is the same as 25 years ago: melancholy, happy, nostalgic.
Forewarnings in a characteristic Ekta Kapoor show in the 2000s were marked by natural indicators, such as windows opening unexpectedly when the wind blows, and there is lightning and thunder. It amuses the audience when Hemant asks his well-dressed mother Gayatri, "Maa, aap taiyyaar nahin hui?" Classic Ekta Kapoor performance vibes.
What's new for Mihir and Tulsi
The promo hinted at Tulsi upgrading with time; however, the first episode depicts her still behind the kitchen. While cooking in the kitchen with her daughter-in-law Nandini (Gauri Pradhan), Tulsi says, "Baa kehti thi, ghar mein maa, bahu, beti agar khana banaye aur khaane ki khushboo poore ghar mein jaye, tabhi ghar ghar jaisa lagta hai." A viewer may wonder that with a 25-year leap, some things would have changed adjusting the modern frame, but that isn't the case with Tulsi and Virani Parivaar.
A special cameo also awaits as Apara Mehta comes in frame as the angel, Tulsi and her saas have a heartfelt conversation as she wishes her 'happy anniversary', Savita dazzles in her iconic red bindi and vibrant look, taking the fans back to the old days and their banter. As the family gets introduced, there are three new faces, Pari, Angad and Hrithik. Apart from them, all the family members have moved out and live in different cities. They are here only for Tulsi and Mihir's 38th anniversary.
Mihir aka Amar Upadhyay, brings back the old charm. It looks like time had stopped all these years for Mihir and Tulsi to return. As he enters the frame, rushing for a meeting, Tulsi gets disappointed that he doesn't remember their anniversary but that isn't the case. He was just waiting for her to come out so that he could give her a surprise. Mihir buys Tulsi a brand new car. However, Tulsi, being the classic bahu, complains about overspending. Their chemistry brings back the old flashes of young Tulsi and Mihir.
The archival footage of Mihir and Tulsi at their peak follows their romantic moment, including their first meeting as adults, their wedding, their first pregnancy with Gautam, Mihir's death scene, his return at Tulsi's remarriage to Anupam Kapadia, and a cut to 38 years later as a couple.
Upcoming drama in the show
In addition to Kyunki, Kalesh has returned, and her new name is Gayatri Chachi, played by Kamalika Guha Thakurta. Gayatri is upset with Mihir and Tulsi for ignoring her son, Hemant. She accuses the new-age Ram-Sita of sending the family's other children into vanvaas while they enjoy their raj in Ayodhya.
Meanwhile, Pari and Angad, the new kids in the family, argue over how they are "different" from the other youngsters in the house.
Gayatri Chachi appears to have been entrusted with worrying Tulsi in the new season of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, since she implies that the conflict between paidaish and parvarish will eventually become a source of anxiety for the protagonist.
