At Asia 7 in Gurgaon, which starts its Southeast Asian curry festival today

India has always had a close connection with Southeast Asia. And with curry too. Because it is from here that curry travelled across the globe. The term 'curry' was coined by the British before Independence, originating from kari, meaning any dish, wet or dry, flavoured with curry powder. One region, closer home, where the curry in its various versions is very popular is Southeast Asia. Japanese have the kare (meaning curry), Malaysia has Nonya cuisine, Thailand has gaengs, Indonesia has gulai and kari, Vietnam has ka ri and so on. So when I found out that a restaurant that serves Southeast Asian cuisine has come up with a curry festival in Gurgaon, I went to check them out.

Ghar ki murgi
The restaurant, located inside a mall on a highway, has come up with eight veg and non-veg curries which are to be tried with rice -- plain or flavoured. Such is the familiarity of our tongues with the curry that you will find some to be completely exotic while others would come across as the more
normal ghar ka khana.

Yumm and strong
One curry I really loved was the Ikan Asam Pedas (hot and sour curry) from Malaysia with fish. It is a red hot pepper and sour tamarind curry with a dash of coconut cream. The taste lingers with you for long. One bit of advice though, since the flavours are very strong in this curry, have it last because otherwise you might miss the subtle tastes of other curries.

The Gulai Ayam (Indonesian Chicken Curry) was exceptionally good, with its subtle flavours. One could easily make out the taste of lemon grass and galangal among others in this classical home style chicken and coconut curry with turmeric and cooked with garlic, shallots and spices. The Kare Raisu (Japanese curry) reminded me of the chicken cooked in Bengali households on Sundays, with potatoes to serve more. Nothing exceptional, but okay for those who don't like strong flavours. I liked the succulent chicken in Kari Kapitan, a Singaporean dish prepared by slow simmering various fresh spices and pounded herbs. Wanna give it a shot?
