A 60-year-old retired employee of an airline allegedly killed his 54-year-old estranged wife at her residence in Powai area of Mumbai on Saturday night, police said.

The accused, identified as Rajiv Chandrakant Lala, was arrested after he left behind his mobile phone and car keys at the crime scene, leading police to him, the officials said.


The victim has been identified as Shalini Devi, who lived on Andheri-Kurla Road, they said.



According to police, Rajiv and Shalini married in 1993 but began living separately in 1995 due to frequent quarrels over domestic issues, they said.

On Saturday night, Rajiv reportedly went to Shalini’s Powai residence to collect some documents. The two got into an argument, during which Rajiv allegedly smothered Shalini with a pillow, killing her, police said.
