A large cavity, estimated to be about 10 feet deep, appeared on Dr Muzumdar Road in Thane (West) on Tuesday evening after a drainage chamber collapsed near HDFC Bank, opposite the Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran office, near Gadkari Rangayatan.

According to the Disaster Management Cell of the Thane Municipal Corporation, the incident occurred at 7.43 pm. The collapse led to a significant portion of the road caving in, but no injuries were reported.


Officials from the drainage department of the Naupada-Kopri Ward Committee, along with Disaster Management Cell staff and a pickup vehicle, rushed to the spot soon after the incident was reported by a local resident, Nainesh Patankar.



As a precautionary measure, civic staff barricaded the area and put up warning signs to prevent accidents. The location has been marked as a danger zone.

Municipal officials have alerted the department concerned and instructed prompt action to address the situation. A report on the remedial measures taken has been requested by the Disaster Management Cell.

Portion of a dilapidated building collapses in Thane; residents evacuated

A portion of a dilapidated building, classified as dangerous by the civic authorities, collapsed in Maharashtra's Thane city in the wee hours of Tuesday, civic officials said, reported news agency PTI.

As many as 17 families were evacuated and moved to a safer location after the incident that occurred around 2.25 am at the Nandadeep building in the Wagle Estate area, the official said, reported PTI.

The building, which was more than 50 years old, was classified under the C2B category of dangerous buildings by the Thane Municipal Corporation after a survey this year, said Yasin Tadvi, chief of the disaster management cell, reported PTI.

He said a part of the third-floor roof and the stair gallery of the third floor collapsed, but no one was injured.

All necessary teams rushed to the spot, and the structure was evacuated as a precautionary measure, Tadvi said.

He said residents of the two adjacent buildings have also been asked to temporarily vacate and find alternative accommodation, reported PTI.

As per data provided by the civic authorities, 4,407 buildings have been classified as dangerous, and the highest 1,343 structures are in the Mumbra area.
