Maharashtra legislature's monsoon session postponed to June 27

The monsoon session of the Maharashtra legislature, which was earlier scheduled to commence on June 10, is now expected to begin in end of June, reported PTI citing state forest minister Sudhir Mungantiwar on Thursday. Speaking to reporters in Mumbai, he said, "Earlier, it was decided that the Maharashtra legislature's monsoon session will start on June 10. Now, it has been postponed until June 27." Although the minister did not provide any reason for the postponement, it appears the move is linked to the formation of the new BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at the Centre, said the PTI report. On Friday in New Delhi, the newly elected members of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) are expected to meet and choose Narendra Modi as their leader, supporting him to assume the office of prime minister for a third term. The swearing-in is likely to be held on Sunday (June 9), some alliance members said, reported PTI The upcoming session of the Maharashtra legislature in Mumbai will be the last one before the state heads to assembly polls which are due in October.  Mumbai parties move on to MLC polls After the LS polls, BJP and Shiv Sena (UBT) party workers in Mumbai are now focusing on the graduate and teachers constituency elections of the Maharashtra Legislative Council. Both parties have urged their workers to remain vigilant and reach out to every voter. The term of the current member will end on July 7. According to the EC, the elections for both constituencies will be held on June 26, with the results announced on July 1. A BJP Mumbai leader stated that the voting outcome for the graduate constituency depends on which party registered more voters. Our leader has already instructed us to reach out to every graduate voter. On Sunday, Mumbai BJP president Adv Ashish Shelar conducted a meeting with senior party members of the city to discuss the strategy for the MLC election. After the meeting, while speaking with the media, MLA Ashish Shelar said, “Due to the good voter registration done through the organisation, party members insist that BJP should contest both the teacher and graduate election seats in Mumbai. The final decision will be made by the region's core committee, and as a Mahayuti, the steering committee will discuss it among themselves and announce it in a few days.” Shiv Sena (UBT) announced Anil Parab as the candidate for the graduate constituency and J M Abhyankar for the teachers constituency. J  M Abhyankar is a school education expert and the division head of the UBT Shikshak Sena. He has also held the post of the chairman of the state scheduled castes and tribes commission. "Since 1985, we have won this constituency. Our Shakha (local party offices) have a list of every graduate voter, and we have already started meeting them," stated the UBT leader, emphasising the significance of voter registration in determining the outcome of graduate constituency elections. According to the EC data, there are around 91,253 voters in the graduate constituency and 14,515 voters in the teachers' constituency. Former member of the graduate constituency of undivided Shiv Sena, Dr Deepak Sawant, is also willing to contest the election again. He is now with Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena.

Ajit Pawar hold meet of NCP MLAs after Lok Sabha debacle; 5 legislators absent

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Thursday held a meeting of Nationalist Congress Party MLAs after the party performed poorly in the Lok Sabha polls, reported PTI. In the Lok Sabha results that came out on Tuesday, the NCP won just one seat (Raigad). It lost the prestige battle in Baramati, where NCP(SP) sitting MP Supriya Sule retained the constituency defeating Ajit Pawar's wife Sunetra. Ajit Pawar, who is NCP national president, party working president Praful Patel and state unit chief Sunil Tatkare, who retained Raigad seat, were present at the meeting. Of the 41 MLAs in the party, some five were absent, sources said adding that deputy speaker Narhari Zirwal is abroad while others were unwell. These sources said the leaders and MLAs discussed the prevailing political situation as well as the party's performance in the four Lok Sabha seats it contested in the state. Meanwhile, NCP (SP) president Sharad Pawar today met the newly-elected MPs of his party here and held interactions with them. The Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) has won eight out of the 10 Lok Sabha seats it contested in Maharashtra in the just-concluded Lok Sabha elections. It fought the polls as a constituent of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) along with the Shiv Sena (UBT) and the Congress. Of the eight newly-elected parliamentarians, only Supriya Sule (Baramati) and Nilesh Lanke (Ahmednagar) were absent for the meeting at the party office here. All other MPs - Amol Kolhe (Shirur), Bhaskar Bhagre (Dindori), Suresh Mhatre (Bhiwandi), Bajrang Sonawane (Beed), Dhairyasheel Mohite Patil (Madha) and Amar Kale (Wardha) were present. Pawar interacted with the MPs as well as the party cadres, and took stock of his outfit's performance in the elections. By winning eight out of 10 seats, the NCP (SP) has achieved an impressive strike rate of 80 per cent. In contrast, the Nationalist Congress Party led by his estranged nephew and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar won just one of the four seats it contested, recording a strike rate of 25 per cent. The eight seats won by the NCP (SP) include Baramati, which witnessed a riveting family battle between Sharad Pawar's daughter and sitting MP Supriya Sule and Ajit Pawar's wife Sunetra Pawar. The Ajit Pawar-led NCP emerged victorious only in the Raigad Lok Sabha constituency, with the party's state unit president Sunil Tatkare defeating his Shiv Sena (UBT) rival Anant Geete. The rebellion by Ajit Pawar in July last year led to a split in the NCP. The Election Commission identified the Ajit Pawar-led camp as the "real NCP" and allotted the party symbol 'clock' to it.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) scientist Sunil Kamble said the monsoon has reached Sindhudurg district in south Konkan and Sangli and Kolhapur in western Maharashtra. It is likely to reach Mumbai between June 9 and 10, he added. — Regional Meteorological Center,Mumbai (@RMC_Mumbai) June 6, 2024 Mumbai weather update: City receives season's first pre-monsoon showers Several parts of Mumbai received the first pre-monsoon showers of the season on Wednesday morning, bringing some respite to residents from the scorching heat and humidity. Here's the latest Mumbai weather update. Mumbaikars woke up to a cloudy morning and some parts of the city later started receiving light rains from around 7 am. Partly Cloudy The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in its Mumbai weather update has predicted partly cloudy sky on Wednesday. The maximum temperature is likely to settle at 35 degrees Celsius and minimum temperature will be recorded at 29 degrees Celsius. Many parts of the city like Dadar, Kandivali, Magathane, Oshiwara, Wadala, Ghatkopar witnessed showers in the range of 4 mm to 26 mm between 7 am and 8 am. Some parts of central and south Mumbai also received light rain. Traffic normal According to officials, road traffic and trains services were running normal in the city. Monsoon usually arrives in Mumbai in the second week of June. Last month, Mumbai witnessed unseasonal rain with gusty winds during which a hoarding collapsed in Ghatkopar area, claiming several lives. El Nino ending The 2023-24 El-Nino event, which drove record-breaking temperatures and extreme weather around the world, is predicted to transition to La-Nina conditions later this year, according to a new update from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The world experienced the warmest April ever and the 11th consecutive month of record-high temperatures this year. Sea-surface temperatures have been record-high for the last 13 months, according to the WMO. The WMO said this is happening due to the naturally-occurring El Nino -- unusual warming of waters in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean -- and the additional energy trapped in the atmosphere and ocean by greenhouse gases from human activities. Amid a prevailing but weakening El Nino, millions of people in South Asia, including India and Pakistan, endured brutal heat in April and May. The latest forecasts from the WMO Global Producing Centres of Long-Range Forecasts give equal chances (50 per cent) to either neutral conditions or a transition to La Nina during June-August.

Chandrashekhar Bawankule accuses MVA of deceptive politics in Maharashtra polls

On Thursday, Maharashtra BJP chairman Chandrashekhar Bawankule stated that opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) leaders engaged in deceitful politics, akin to "Shakuni neeti," to mislead the state's people and win the Lok Sabha elections. He expressed confidence that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would win the upcoming elections with its emphasis on development. Speaking to reporters at Nagpur airport about the Lok Sabha election results, Bawankule remarked that the MVA's triumph through misleading techniques will not influence people in the forthcoming elections. He emphasised that people will vote for development over casteism. "The MVA won through 'Shakuni neeti' (Machiavellian policy), but this election result would not have an impact on the upcoming polls and people will vote in the name of development and not casteism," the BJP leader said. Regarding Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis' offer to quit following the BJP's decreased Lok Sabha tally in Maharashtra, Bawankule stated that the party's core group, including MLAs, MPs, leaders, and workers, urged Fadnavis to continue leading the state. Bawankule stated that BJP MPs, state presidents, and other leaders were invited to a critical parliamentary board meeting in Delhi on Friday. In the recent Lok Sabha elections, the MVA, which included the Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and NCP (SP), won 30 out of 48 seats in Maharashtra. On the other side, the ruling Mahayuti alliance, which includes the BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP, gained 17 seats. The BJP's seat count in the state fell from 23 to 9. Bawankule accused MVA leaders of misleading backward communities by implying that the Constitution was under threat and wrongly stating that the BJP would take away their rights. He saw that similar false myths were promoted across tribal and Maratha communities, promoting caste politics. "But the BJP, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, had asked for votes for a developed Bharat, and the opposition INDIA alliance and MVA indulged in caste-based politics, which will not last much and people will understand the lies being spread by the INDIA alliance," he said. Despite the defeat, Bawankule emphasised the BJP's commitment to development under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership. He chastised the MVA for prioritising caste politics over development projects. Bawankule emphasised the importance of introspection inside the BJP about the reasons behind its election setbacks. He also advised Maharashtra's Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar to assess the issues that contributed to their defeat in the elections. "We will introspect on the reasons and make course correction. However, one thing is certain that the MVA, through its 'Shakuni neeti' misled and confused the voters, it did not speak about development and indulged in caste-based politics in the campaign," he claimed.

Jayant Patil says similarity in poll symbols led to NCP (SP)'s defeat in Satara

Jayant Patil, the Maharashtra NCP (SP) chairman, said that the similarity between his party's election emblem and that of an independent candidate confused voters, resulting in the NCP (SP) candidate's defeat in the Satara Lok Sabha constituency. Patil, speaking to the media on Wednesday, claimed that the Election Commission of India (ECI) purposely assigned similar emblems to independent candidates in order to split votes. He added that his party would bring up this issue with the ECI, reported PTI.  Following a split in Sharad Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party, the ECI allocated the poll symbol "man blowing turha" (a traditional trumpet) to the NCP (SP). On Tuesday, Udayanraje Bhonsle of the BJP defeated NCP (SP) candidate Shashikant Shinde by more than 32,000 votes in the Satara Lok Sabha seat. Independent candidate Sanjay Gade, who used the poll symbol "tutari" (trumpet), garnered 37,062 votes. Patil pointed out that the NCP (SP) had earlier lodged a complaint with the ECI against a similar sign provided to an independent candidate in Baramati, their stronghold. In the Marathi list of Satara candidates, the independent candidate's symbol was "tutari," whereas in the English list, it was "trumpet." The NCP (SP) candidate's symbol was characterised as "tutari wajnavar manoos" in Marathi and "man blowing turha" in English. "Our symbol was 'man blowing tutari' but at the same time, the trumpet symbol was also given to independent candidates and it was called 'tutari' in the list. As a result, in all the constituencies where the NCP (SP) contested, a considerable number of votes went to candidates having the trumpet symbol," Patil claimed. He pointed out that in constituencies like Dindori, Madha, and Beed, independent candidates with the trumpet symbol received substantial votes—over 1 lakh, 48,000, and 54,000 votes respectively—impacting the NCP (SP)'s performance in Lok Sabha Elections 2024. "In Dindori, the candidate having the trumpet symbol received more than 1 lakh votes. In Satara, our candidate got defeated by 32,000 votes and at the same time, the candidate with the trumpet symbol polled more than 37,000 votes," he said. Patil emphasised that this confusion was evident in Satara, where the NCP (SP) candidate lost by 32,000 votes while the independent candidate with the trumpet symbol garnered more than 37,000 votes. "The similarity in the symbol name created confusion among voters. We had taken objection before the elections and raised the issue with the ECI, but it paid no heed. It seems this symbol was allotted deliberately for the division of votes," Patil alleged. He concluded by stating that the party would present their case to the ECI on this matter. Baramati Battle: Supriya Sule wins Lok Sabha Elections 2024 from constituency Nationalist Congress Party (SP) candidate Supriya Sule retained her Baramati seat in Lok Sabha Elections 2024 by more than 1.5 lakh votes, defeating her sister-in-law Sunetra Pawar in a highly-watched contest. Ajit Pawar, who split the party last year, is known for his strong following in Baramati, making Sule's victory significant. "I am thankful to the people of Baramati. After this victory, our collective responsibilities have increased. Let bygones be bygones. What happened during the Lok Sabha elections 2024 did not reflect well on Maharashtra's politics and should be avoided in the upcoming state elections," Sule said. "It was everyone's responsibility to uphold the 'aan, baan, shaan' (honour, pride, and prestige) and culture of Maharashtra during elections," she added, expressing commitment to maintaining this tradition in future elections.

Ajit Pawar reviews NCP's Lok Sabha Elections 2024 performance

Ajit Pawar, Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister, met with senior NCP leaders on Thursday to discuss the party's performance in the recent Lok Sabha Elections 2024. The meeting, held at his official residence Deogiri in south Mumbai, included discussions about the results, in which the NCP contested four seats in Maharashtra but won only one, Raigad. The conference held to discuss Lok Sabha Elections 2024 performance was attended by NCP President Ajit Pawar, Party Working President Praful Patel, and top leaders and state ministers Hasan Mushrif, Chhagan Bhujbal, Dilip Walse Patil, and Dhananjay Munde. Sunetra Pawar, Ajit Pawar's wife, was defeated by NCP (Sharad Pawar) MP Supriya Sule, Sharad Pawar's daughter, by more than 1.5 lakh votes in the Baramati seat. Last July, Ajit Pawar and many MLAs joined the ruling BJP-Shiv Sena coalition in Maharashtra, causing a schism in the NCP, which was founded by his uncle Sharad Pawar. The Maha Vikas Aghadi, comprising the Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP (Sharad Pawar), and Congress, secured 30 of Maharashtra's 48 Lok Sabha seats. In contrast, the Mahayuti coalition of the BJP, Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar's NCP won 17 seats. Sharad Pawar's NCP faction triumphs in Maharashtra Lok Sabha Elections 2024 Veteran politician Sharad Pawar has maintained strong grassroots support, with his section of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP-SP) winning 8 of the 10 contested Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra, resulting in an 80 per cent success rate in the 2024 elections. In contrast, the NCP faction led by his estranged nephew and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar won only one of the four seats it sought, for a 25 per cent success rate, reported PTI.  According to the report, the Congress also made a big comeback, winning 13 of the 17 seats it contested, up from its lone seat in the 2019 elections, with a 75 per cent success rate, the report stated.  The NCP (SP) won the majority of its seats in western Maharashtra, Sharad Pawar's traditional stronghold. Ajit Pawar's faction secured only the Raigad Lok Sabha seat, where the party's state president Sunil Tatkare defeated his Shiv Sena (UBT) rival, Anant Geete. Among the NCP (SP)'s eight victories was Baramati, featuring a high-profile race between Sharad Pawar's daughter Supriya Sule and Ajit Pawar's wife Sunetra Pawar.

MVA: Fadnavis offered resignation as Sena-NCP have become 'liability' for BJP

The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) in Maharashtra claimed on Wednesday that the Shiv Sena-NCP alliance has become a 'burden' for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), leading Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to quit. MVA leaders, including Congress' Atul Londhe, Shiv Sena (UBT)'s Sushma Andhare, and NCP (SP)'s Mahesh Tapase, chastised Fadnavis for accepting moral responsibility for the MahaYuti's dismal performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha election, reported IANS.  According to the report, Londhe pointed out that the MahaYuti failed to gain 45-plus of Maharashtra's 48 Lok Sabha seats, undermining the BJP's national objective of 400-plus seats. He claimed that Fadnavis' resignation offer was an attempt to anticipate any proceedings against him by the BJP's national leadership. "This is a drama to hide his lack-lustre performance. Fadnavis has realised that the party has failed in the state and the resignation is to pre-empt any action against him by the BJP central leadership," said Londhe, Congress' state chief spokesperson. Andhare claimed that Fadnavis is striving to redeem himself following the party's huge defeats, particularly with the impending Assembly elections. "It has dawned on Fadnavis that after the Lok Sabha reverses, there is no way that he can ever hope to return as the CM in the future, so he has made the offer to quit his post. However, the party will consider other leaders for the top post," stated Andhare, SS (UBT) leader, per an IANS report.  Per the IANS report, Tapase stated that Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar had become a burden for the BJP, failing to contribute to the party's vote share. "By the moves to quit as Deputy CM, Fadnavis is trying to remove the foundations of the MahaYuti regime. Fadnavis knows that if he steps out, the state government will collapse, and he can shift the blame onto Shinde-Pawar for the poll fallout," stated Tapase, Chief Spokesperson of the NCP (SP). Earlier on Wednesday, Fadnavis voiced his desire to be released from his government duties so that he could focus on party building ahead of the Assembly elections. However, BJP state president Chandrashekhar Bawankule indicated that Fadnavis may continue to work for the party while staying Deputy Chief Minister, the report added. Fadnavis' surprising declaration came after the MahaYuti won only 17 seats, compared to the MVA's 30 wins, and an Independent candidate in Sangli is anticipated to back the Congress.
