A case has been registered against a brick kiln owner in Maharashtra’s Thane district for allegedly forcing a 13-year-old girl into bonded labour, police said on Sunday.

According to the news agency PTI, the girl, belonging to the Katkari tribal community, was rescued from a kiln located in Bhiwandi taluka. Following the rescue, police registered a case on Saturday against the accused, Bhushan Kaluram Pardhi, a resident of Dinkarpada, according to an officer from Padgha police station.

Investigations revealed that the girl’s mother, who was employed at the same kiln, had taken a loan of Rs 13,000 from Pardhi in June 2024 to cover medical and household expenses. However, when the woman fell ill and was unable to continue working, the accused allegedly forcibly took her minor daughter and made her work under harsh conditions at the kiln.

The girl was reportedly made to work until December 2024, after which Pardhi continued to harass the family, demanding the girl’s return to work. Earlier this week, the accused allegedly entered their home and attempted to take the girl away again, the police official added.

While no arrests have been made yet, a case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act and the Indian Penal Code, and further investigation is underway.

The quarrel escalated, and the group allegedly attacked the victim, beating him severely. Police rushed to the scene after being alerted and sent the body for postmortem examination.

Based on a complaint filed by a family member of the deceased, a case of murder was registered against five individuals, including three brothers, who have since been arrested. A search is underway to trace the remaining accused, the official added.
