In a surprising turn of events, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) legislator Amol Mitkari, who had earlier questioned Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Anjana Krishna’s educational and caste certificates—on the basis of which she cleared the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exam—has retracted his comments and issued an apology on Saturday, reported news agency PTI.
The controversy began when Deputy Chief Minister and NCP President Ajit Pawar reportedly rebuked Krishna, the sub-divisional police officer of Karmala, over the phone, asking her to halt action against illegal soil excavation in Solapur district.
Following the release of a video of the interaction, Pawar on Friday said he did not intend to interfere but was trying to de-escalate a tense situation, reported PTI.
Meanwhile, Mitkari had written on social media platform X that he had sought information from the UPSC regarding Krishna’s educational and caste certificates. His post went viral, drawing sharp criticism from NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) Lok Sabha Member of Parliament (MP) Supriya Sule and Congress leader Yashomati Thakur for targeting the woman officer.
Clarifying his position and issuing an apology, Mitkari said, “This was not my party’s position. It is my personal view. I have the highest respect for our police force and the officers who serve honestly. I completely agree with the position of the party’s senior leadership."
He further stated that he was retracting his social media post on the Solapur incident and apologising, reported PTI.
Earlier, a video aired by Marathi news channels showed Krishna speaking to Pawar on a local NCP worker’s phone. Krishna did not recognise his voice initially.
Pawar then made a video call to the officer and, according to PTI, asked her in a stern tone to stop action against the illegal excavation of murrum soil.
The incident took place on August 31, when revenue department officials and Krishna reached Kapre Wasti in Solapur district to take action against illegal excavation.
Amid the controversy, opposition parties criticised Deputy Chief Minister Pawar for his remarks. Defending the NCP, MLA Rohit Pawar supported Ajit Pawar, stating that there are more pressing issues in the state that need attention.
