24 March,2026 02:49 AM IST | Mumbai | Shirley BoseIn a rare show of unity, India’s top telecom operators — Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea — have jointly written to the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL), raising concerns over its latest tender for in-building solutions (IBS) on the city's first underground metro rail network, Aqua Line 3, offering to buy out the infrastructure to expedite the resumption of mobile connectivity. The letter comes in the backdrop of MMRCL terminating its earlier IBS contract with Saudi Arabia-based Advanced Communications and Electronics Systems Company (ACES) and floating a fresh tender on March 20, 2026. In a letter, a copy of which is with mid-day, they have flagged commuter inconvenience and the urgent need for seamless connectivity, the telcos said Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd (RJIL) has already sought right-of-way (ROW) permissions to deploy IBS infrastructure across Metro stations and tunnels. They added that all telecom service providers are aligned in supporting a single-network approach to ensure uninterrupted mobile services. The operators stated they will not issue any “comfort letter” to IBS vendors under the new tender, alleging that MMRCL is attempting to impose “exorbitant” ROW and space charges. They argued that the reserve price quoted in the tender — around Rs 1,000 per sq ft for largely unusable station areas — is significantly higher than premium commercial rentals in Mumbai, which range between Rs 250–300 per sq ft in prime locations like Nariman Point. The telcos warned that such pricing is not in line with the principle of “just compensation” and could delay telecom infrastructure rollout in an operational metro system. Instead, they have proposed that Right of Way (ROW) permission be granted to RJIL, allowing either fresh IBS deployment or utilisation of the network already created by ACES, enabling faster restoration of mobile services. The operators have urged MMRCL to scrap the current tender in the interest of public convenience and ensure immediate steps to restore seamless connectivity for Mumbai Metro commuters. When contacted, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) did not respond till the time of going to the press.
23 March,2026 08:45 PM IST | Mumbai | Rajendra B. AklekarSeveral parts of Mumbai have been experiencing excessive heat. With a sharp rise in temperatures on Monday, the inland pockets of Mumbai recorded significantly higher temperatures. As per the India Meteorological Department, among the highest readings, Ram Mandir in Mumbai recorded the maximum temperature of 39.0 degrees Celsius on Monday, making it one of the hottest locations in the city for the day. Suburban areas also experienced intense heat, with Vikhroli recording 37.6 degrees Celsius and Vidyavihar at 36.8 degrees Celsius. Dahisar and Chembur reported maximum temperatures of 35.4 degrees Celsius and 35.6 degrees Celsius, respectively, while Byculla registered a relatively lower 34.2 degrees Celsius. While the temperatures in South Mumbai’s Colaba recorded a maximum temperature of 34.9 degrees Celsius, with relative humidity at 57 per cent. No rainfall was reported in the area. Suburban weather station at Santacruz logged a higher maximum temperature of 36.5 degrees Celsius, accompanied by lower humidity levels at 42 per cent. Weather experts attribute the temperature variation to Mumbai’s coastal geography, where sea breeze tends to moderate temperatures in southern parts like Colaba, while inland and eastern suburbs experience more intense heat. The rising temperatures have led to discomfort among residents, especially during the afternoon hours, with heat stress becoming a growing concern. Officials have advised citizens to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight during peak hours. IMD issues yellow alert Earlier during the day, IMD had also said that Mumbai on Monday was likely to experience clear skies and heatwave conditions were very likely to prevail in the suburbs, the weather agency also issued a yellow alert. A weather bulletin also stated that hot and humid conditions were very likely in isolated pockets in Mumbai, Thane and Palghar. A similar alert has also been issued for parts of Maharashtra, including Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg. Thunderstorm, rain in parts of Maharashtra Meanwhile, according to the IMD, some parts of Maharashtra were very likely to witness rain and thunderstorms on March 23. Districts including Ahilyanagar, Pune, Satara, Sangli, Solapur, Latur and Dharashiv were likely to witness thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, light-to-moderate rainfall and gusty winds (30-40 km/h) at isolated places.

23 March,2026 07:27 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentThe Thane Municipal Corporation on Monday announced a 24-hour water supply shutdown in multiple parts of the city on Friday, March 27. As per the official statement, the water cut has been announced due to ongoing infrastructure work linked to an elevated road project. The official statement issued by the civic body further highlighted that the disruption is necessitated by pipeline work being undertaken by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority. The project involves the construction of an elevated road stretch from Anand Nagar to Saket. During the course of construction, an existing 813 mm diameter rising main pipeline supplying water to the Indira Nagar pumping station was affected. Reason for water cut As part of the rectification and upgrade process, MMRDA has laid a new 900 mm diameter pipeline, covering 520 metres of the total required 2,200 metres. To enable the transition from the old pipeline to the new one, authorities will carry out interconnection work, which requires a temporary suspension of the water supply. The shutdown will begin at 9:00 AM on Friday, March 27, and continue for 24 hours until 9:00 AM the following day. According to the official statement, areas that will face complete water disruption include Indira Nagar, Sathe Nagar, Ambewadi, Dawale Nagar, Savarkar Nagar, Lokmanya Nagar (Pada No. 2, 3 and 4), Chaitti Nagar, Perera Nagar, Jhanje Nagar, Srinagar, Kisan Nagar, Shivtekdi, Shanti Nagar, Kailas Nagar, Bhatwadi, Warlipada, Rupadevi Pada, Ramnagar, C.P. Talav, the Yeoor area, and nearby localities. Thane Municipal Corporation has further informed that once supply resumes, water pressure is likely to remain low for the next one to two days as the system stabilises itself. The civic body has also appealed to residents to use water sparingly and cooperate during the scheduled shutdown to ensure smooth completion of the infrastructure upgrade work. Focus on holistic development The school goes beyond basic education, offering facilities such as vocational training, small-scale industry exposure, culinary training, robotics, science, and computer labs. Activity-based learning materials tailored for the initiative were also unveiled during the inauguration. Officials highlighted that the model is designed to address not just educational gaps, but also the social, economic, and psychological challenges faced by children living on the streets or under flyovers. Bringing children into the mainstream Speaking at the event, Mayor Tawde noted that integrating out-of-school children into mainstream education is a challenging task but essential for long-term social development. She praised the organisation’s efforts, stating that similar initiatives over the past two decades have helped produce professionals, engineers, and sportspersons. She added that the BMC will conduct a survey across Mumbai to identify locations where such schools are needed, particularly near traffic signals and flyovers, and ensure proper arrangements, especially during the monsoon season. Support needed from all sections Emphasising the importance of collective responsibility, the Mayor called for support from government bodies, civic authorities, and society at large to sustain and expand such initiatives. She also urged parents to enrol their children in these schools. Backing from administration and government Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Education) Dr. Prachi Jambeikar stated that the project, supported financially by the Mumbai Suburban District Collector and backed by the BMC, aims to provide education, nutrition, technological exposure, and mental support to vulnerable children, enabling their transition into municipal schools. Samarth Bharat Vyaspeeth CEO Bhatu Sawant noted that migrant and nomadic families often lack access to flexible education systems, making initiatives like Signal Schools crucial. He added that financial assistance through the District Planning Fund helped set up the infrastructure, including containers used for classrooms. The inauguration ceremony was attended by civic officials, public representatives, local citizens, students, and parents, marking a collaborative step towards inclusive and accessible education in Mumbai.
