Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday chaired a disaster management meeting in Mumbai, which was attended by senior officials from Mantralaya, the BMC, and other departments concerned. Meanwhile, Mumbai BJP president Ashish Shelar demanded imposing penalties on negligent contractors.

The meeting assumes significance as pre-monsoon showers on Tuesday evening exposed Maharashtra’s preparedness for the rains. Multiple cities, including Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan, and Pune, faced waterlogging. A brief spell of rain flooded subways and several arterial roads in Mumbai. Similar situations were reported in Pune and other parts of the state.

In the meeting the chief minister, other ministers and administrative officials were given a presentation of disaster preparedness. Fadnavis said, “All administrative officers should be in touch with the headquarters and work even on Saturdays and Sundays as it is their responsibility.”

On Wednesday, Shelar inspected areas in the eastern suburbs — Ghatkopar, Vikhroli, and Bhandup — as part of a pre-monsoon preparedness drive. During the visit, he instructed the BMC administration and other relevant agencies to take strict action against contractors responsible for substandard work.

Admitting that contractors had fallen short in planning and execution of road projects, Suburban Guardian Minister Shelar insisted that those who failed to deliver must face stern consequences.

Speaking to the media, Shelar said the administration has been directed not to start any new road work until the ongoing ones are completed. “BJP’s commitment is clear. We are here for citizens and accountability. We take complete responsibility for the condition of roads in Mumbai suburbs,” he stated.
